The wolf in the fairy tale is at once a source of fear, a representation of evil, a literal animal threat and an opportunity for female sexual exploration. Using the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale tradition as a case study, in this talk I trace the history of lycanthropy within the folk and fairy tale tradition from its early incarnations in the Middle Ages to the evolution of the ‘sexy werewolf’ in the contemporary supernatural romance. I discuss how the presence of the supernatural and enchantment within this tale has provided distinct narrative spaces for cultural criticism and commentary. I focus specifically on how female sexuality, femininity and monstrosity are explored through lycanthropy as well as romantic relationships with werewolves.



 

Bio: Dr. Nicola Welsh-Burke is a children’s and YA literature researcher, pop culture scholar, and folklorist at Western Sydney University in Sydney, Australia. Her research focuses on the ‘feminine’ text, fairy tales, and YA supernatural romance. She looks specifically at representations of adolescent girls and girlhood, including their negotiation of femininity and sexual desire, pleasure and sexuality, female monstrosity and hunger, and romantic relationships within these genres.
