<p>The EU promised in the Treaty of Lisbon of 2007 to contribute to ‘the sustainable development of the Earth, solidarity and mutual respect among peoples, free and fair trade, eradication of poverty and the protection of human rights,  as well as to the strict observance and the development of international law’. </p><p>To what extent does it fulfil its promise? Due to its Treaty commitment, and its economic power, it is in an excellent position to use its regulations and aid and trade policies to influence sustainable development in its partner states, that is, economic and social development, and to foster labour rights, gender equality and education for all. In this talk, Dr Gegout will explore the EU’s rocky road to providing sustainable development. </p>
