Staying active with dementia: A roundtable discussion

Different experts share their views on how to stay active while living with dementia, with insights from research, practice and real-life.

This is a free online event via Zoom. We will start at five past two (14:05) and end at five to (14:55) to allow people to get between different events. We are the<a href="https://www.idealproject.org.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> IDEAL dementia research programme</a>, and have our main base at the University of Exeter.In this seventh session of the IDEAL Webinar Series, we discuss physical activity. Staying active is a key component to living a good life with dementia, but too often people with dementia are not given many options other than to remain sedentary. Exercise is not only possible within the dementia experience, but can significantly improve the health and wellbeing of both people with dementia and carers.This webinar is structured as a roundtable so that you will hear each speaker share their perspective on the topic before we open to Q&amp;A. Each speaker will have 7 minutes to share their thoughts.In this session you will hear from:<ul><li>Professor Christina Victor, Professor of Gerontology and Public Health and Vice Dean (Research) in the College of Health and Life Sciences at Brunel University and Co-Investigator on the IDEAL programme. </li><li>Emma Quaeck, Manager of <a href="https://www.dementiaactifgwynedd.cymru/en/index.php" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dementia Actif Gwynedd</a>, a council-funded bilingual organisation which provides physical and social activity classes based in the community for people living with dementia, family, friends and carers. </li><li>Dr Steven Owen, Knowledge Exchange Officer/Research Fellow on the <a href="https://enlivenproject.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">ENLIVEN project</a>, which aims to increase access to natural environments for older people experiencing cognitive impairment. </li><li>Bronte Heath, Senior Evidence Manager at Alzheimer&#x27;s Society sharing insights from the Society&#x27;s physical activity team, who recently released a &#x27;<a href="https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/sites/default/files/2022-07/AS-Feel-Good-Activities_Folder.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Feel-good folder</a>&#x27;.</li><li>Jane Ward, a former carer and member of the ALWAYs group (IDEAL&#x27;s involvement group), who also leads Dementia Friendly Hampshire where she&#x27;s always on the lookout for new activity possibilities, including cage cricket and walking football. </li></ul>We will record the session to allow others to watch it afterwards. However, we will edit out questions if you don&#x27;t want to be seen. One survey will be sent out after the event after which we will delete your contact information.
