About this event

We are hosting a series of Zoom webinars to gather information from YOU on the state of children’s rights in Scotland. The information you share will help us write a report to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child.

Earlier this year, we shared a survey with children, young people and our members to find out some of the top issues. We have taken note of the themes you raised and now we want to dig deeper to discover more information about these!

This webinar is on supporting children whose rights are most at risk.

We will hear from an expert speaker Bruce Adamson, Children and Young People's Commissioner Scotland, promoting and safeguarding child rights, before moving into breakout rooms facilitated by specialist organisations. In these breakout rooms, we encourage you to share your knowledge, evidence and case studies of children and young people whose rights are most at risk. These children and young people may be:

  • Early years and young children with Starcatchers and Licketyspit;
  • Disabled children with Hope for Autism;
  • Asylum-seeking and refugee children with Aberlour Guardianship;
  • Black, Brown and minority ethnic children with Article 12 in Scotland;
  • LGBTQ+ children with LGBT Youth;
  • Care Experienced children with Who Cares? Scotland;
  • Children in the justice system with CYCJ Scotland;
  • Young carers with Carers Trust Scotland.

How will you have an impact?

Sharing your knowledge, evidence and case studies will help us write our report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. In doing so, our report will help the UN Committee understand the true state of children’s rights in Scotland as it gets ready to review the UK in May 2023.

You will also help the UN Committee decide what recommendations to make to the UK and Scottish Governments. In the past, these recommendations have influenced legislation and policy - for example, a 2016 UN recommendation helped bring about legislation on equal protection from assault.

How can you come prepared?

Don't worry, we won't leave you unprepared for the breakout room discussions! We will send you some prompt questions in advance so you can come ready and raring to go!

Who can join this webinar?

Our webinars are open to both Together members and non-members. We will make every effort to make sure this space is safe and inclusive for all! If there is anything we can do to encourage this environment please do let us know.

If you have any accessibility requirements please let us know when booking your ticket or alternatively email caitlin@togetherscotland.org.uk

On a final note, we will cap the number of participants from the same organisation to two in the hope that this will encourage participants from a wide range of organisations to attend!

We look forward to seeing you! Everyone is welcome #InThisTogether
