Deptford X is a visual arts charity based in Deptford, South East London. We foster artistic talent and nurture community within the borough of Lewisham and beyond. We achieve this through a free biennial festival in Deptford and ongoing activity supporting artists and our local communities throughout the year.Founded in 1998, Deptford X is London’s longest-running visual arts festival. Every two years, we stage a free, ten-day festival, working with hundreds of artists to locate art at the centre of everyday life for all of the area’s communities.

12 noon from Giffin Square to Fordham ParkThe Earth is a Beehive is a processional work for the Deptford X Parade responding to the locality and context of Deptford. For this year’s parade theme, Atiku references an African proverb: ‘The earth is a beehive; we all enter by the same door but live in different cells’. In this context it reflects the energy of Deptford where different global ethnicities live and flourish, whilst considering its past and present histories.The parade is developed in collaboration with local artists; Evan Wong; Deniz Ünal; and Isabel Castro-Jung. Children and young people from Turnham Academy, Watergate School, Edmund Waller Primary School, Youth First | Woodpecker Youth Club and drop-in workshops as part of Discover Lewisham for Families events by Lewisham Borough of Culture.
