Ira Mathur Event

Blackwell's Exeter

Author and journalist Ira Mathur is visiting to talk about her new memoir and her experience of post-colonialism and empire.

Amory B105, University of Exeter

Blackwells Exeter University bookshop is delighted to present a conversation with the Indian-born journalist and writer Ira Mathur on her recently launched debut memoir Love The Dark Days (Peepal Tree Press) on Monday, 17th October. The memoir, bookended by a weekend with Derek Walcott, is on Empire and the story of three generations of Indian women based in British India, Trinidad, St Lucia, England and Tobago. Love The Dark Days, currently stocked by our university bookshop, has received praise from The Bookseller, The Telegraph, Times Radio Michael Portillo, Monique Roffey ( Costa Book of the year 2021), Shrabani Basu, and Maggie Gee. Mathur has recently appeared on Women’s Hour with Anita Rani, and the book has been reviewed by The Telegraph and Irish Times. This is a particular story of three generations of women from the Raj whose damage reflects the crumbling of Empire. This is also a story of diaspora, of what happened to hundreds of thousands of Indians who left India for the West Indies in search of a new life in the New World over 180 years ago. The creative memoir ( written like a novel - and without hubris, I will liken it to A House for Mr Biswas - Naipaul also makes an appearance in the book) was bookended with a weekend with the late Nobel laureate Derek Walcott who updates outdated notions of the royalty and the old world. After the conversation, Blackwells Exeter will also feature other postcolonial titles, which we believe will interest students and professors of Literature, Sociology and History.
