A Round Table for the research theme of 'Living in a Digital Society'

Everybody has a stake in the creation of knowledge in universities. The vaccines that bring virus outbreaks under control, the digital infrastructure we all rely on, and the new energy technologies that will replace fossil fuels, all depend on publicly funded research in universities. Businesses large and small can improve their efficiency and bring new products and services to market by partnering with universities, and so can Third Sector organizations. Join Prof Gabriel Egan, Director of De Montfort University's research theme of 'Living in a Digital Society', for this online Round Table discussion of how researchers can work with wider groups and communities and other sectors of the economy to achieve positive change in the world. Prof Egan will chair the presentation of stories of successes in this area and lead a round of questioning from amongst the presenters and from the audienceT﻿he presenters and their topics are:

Dr Victoria Knight – Associate Professor in Applied Social Sciences at De Montfort UniversityVictoria is director of the Prison and Probation Research Hub and co-director of the Institute for Criminology, Community, Education and Social Justice. For the last two decades she has researched mass communications use in prisons. She investigates, consults and advises on digitalization of our prison both nationally and internationally. Victoria has published three books and has another forthcoming.Dr Knight's presentation will chart her journey into the role of 'expert'. She will highlight how she have worked with prison services and digital developers to bring about ethical digital maturity in prisons across the globe. She will offer examples of what has worked well and what challenges she has faced building relationship and managing expectations in order for knowledge to bring about change that is kind.

Prof Sophy Smith – Professor of Creative Technologies and Director of Institute of Creative Technologies at De Montfort University Sophy is Director of DAPPer (Digital Arts Performance Practice Emerging Research). Sophy was the Principal Investigator in the Audience of the Future (Performance) Demonstrator in 2019-2022, exploring the creative potential of emerging immersive technologies for live performance. In 2021 Sophy was invited by the UK Government's Department for Trade and Industry as a thought leader to deliver a keynote talk at the Dubai Expo, in the Extraordinary Insight programme where she proposed a number of future performance paradigms.Sophy will be talking about knowledge exchange work relating to emerging technologies and creative practice, where she has been working with a number of creative and tech companies to support the integration of emerging technologies within creative practice in order to access new audiences, develop new work and find new distribution platforms.

Dr Rhianna Briars – Knowledge Exchange Officer at De Montfort UniversityRhianna is passionate about supporting the real-world impact of the University's high-quality research and expertise. She has worked both as a researcher and in business-development roles and so well-placed to work at the interface between academia and industry; bringing together the needs and priorities of both. Rhianna largely supports the university with Knowledge Transfer Partnerships; a funded scheme which facilitates business and third sector organisations gaining knowledge from academic research. 

She will share case studies and examples of different kinds of Knowledge Exchange activities to illustrate the breadth of practice and possibilities in this field. This will aim to inspire new routes from primary research into operation, where the innovations create business-growth or positive-change.

T﻿he roundtable will be chaired by Prof Gabriel Egan - Director of the 'Living in a Digital Society' Research Theme at De Montfort UniversityAs well as coordinating the University's research on how matters digital bear on the way we live, he is Professor of Shakespeare Studies and Director of the Centre for Textual Studies at De Montfort University. His research combines computational methods with more traditional textual scholarship to throw light on how writers' personal styles are manifested in their works.
