The Salon presents... Eating Disorder, Self, and Mental Health

The Salon, a monthly virtual discussion, is part of the Mental Health Humanities initiative at the University of Birmingham (UK).

This month The Salon welcomes two provocateurs. Liron Cohen and Karin Eli will be in conversation about eating disorder, self, and mental health. Come and join the discussion.Liron Cohen developed anorexia nervosa at the age of thirteen. Since her recovery about a decade later she has been dedicated to using her experience to help others who are struggling. She currently volunteers as a mentor and team lead with ANAD, an American organisation that trains people in recovery to mentor those who are working toward recovery, and she is working toward establishing a similar organisation in her home country, Israel.andKarin Eli is a medical anthropologist and an assistant professor (research focussed) at Warwick Medical School. She is also a research affiliate at the University of Oxford’s School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, where she serves as deputy director of the Unit for Biocultural Variation and Obesity. Karin’s research on eating disorders explores experience, embodiment, identity and materiality, and her Salon provocation will focus on anthropology’s ecological approach to understanding eating disorders.This monthly virtual discussion is part of the Mental Health and Medical Humanities Initiative, instigated by the Institute for Mental Health, but owned by scholars across campus at the University of Birmingham. Online each month, speakers act as ‘provocateurs’, offering brief 5-minute presentations that might be rooted in a reading, a piece of art, or a key theme from their research. The Salon aims to recreate stimulating, interdisciplinary discussions, which maximise ideas and collaborations and slot discretely into busy schedules.
