Why has the public’s trust in economic knowledge declined in recent years? Why do politicians often portray economists as partisans motivated by ‘group-think’ and ‘narrow orthodoxy’? How can economists reflect and respond to help build trust in their expertise?Bringing together a diverse group of academics and journalists, this panel event will examine the public’s understanding of economic expertise in the current era of populism and post-truth politics. And try to help us understand how we can reform and renew the role of economic expertise in political life.Speakers including Chris Giles (Economics Editor, FT), Lucy Barnes (Associate Professor in Comparative Politics, UCL), and Michela Tincani (Associate Professor in Economics, UCL) will discuss the status of economic expertise and what researchers can do to communicate their ideas more effectively to the public.Refreshments will be provided.PLEASE NOTE: the event is taking place on the first floor and the venue has no lift.
