This includes defining the physical scope of the project, making the case for investment, identifying who owns and maintains the NbS and then measuring how the benefits, costs and impacts of NbS are generated and perceived across the project. This session will showcase real world examples of planning, delivery and management of NbS, with a focus on building the business case, implementing hybrid solutions and their long-term operation and maintenance.NbS have the potential to complement and safeguard grey infrastructure systems, especially in the context of addressing the multi-dimensional challenge of closing the infrastructure gap while concurrently strengthening disaster and climate resilience and working to achieve net zero. However, NbS for infrastructure is yet to achieve scale. This requires policies, capacity development and financing to be in place. Going from gray to green requires a deeper understanding and better articulation of the multiple benefits of integrating nature in infrastructure planning, development and management. What are the avoided losses generated by enhancing the resilience of infrastructure, what are the services it generated for communities? How can NbS affect the cashflow of asset operators? These costs and benefits need to be measured through data and evidence-based approaches that capture not only economic, but also social, environmental and human health benefits. This solution-focused session will take a lifecycle view of NbS and give practical examples of how to build a business case, how to design hybrid solutions, and how operation and maintenance of blue/green-gray infrastructure should be approached. The session will also point participants to curated resources and ongoing initiatives that they can learn and be inspired from to take action.
