Colloquium from Professor Miguel Beruete (Public University of Navarre) on 'Holographic metasurfaces at millimeter-waves'

On Friday 2nd December, 12.30-13.30pm via Zoom, Prof Miguel Beruete (Associate Professor with the Antennas Group-TERALAB at Public University of Navarre) will be giving a colloquium titled 'Holographic metasurfaces at millimeter-waves'. You will receive the Zoom link in your order confirmation email.Metasurfaces are screens engineered to manipulate light in exotic and unconventional ways. They are the latest evolution of metamaterials and like them, are made of small metallic or dielectric pieces, called unit cells, whose shape and arrangement govern the response of the device in a very compact structure, ideally a single layer. Metasurfaces are nowadays under intense research in electromagnetics and currently have given rise to disruptive devices such as planar lenses, beam-steerers, beam-splitters, polarizers, reaching even exotic performances like hologram generators, invisibility cloaks, sensors, etc., from microwaves to the ultraviolet. In this talk, Prof Beruete will summarize some of our most recent and provocative results related with millimetre-waves and terahertz metasurfaces. He will show devices such as compact holographic metalenses based on holography and PB phase and their evolution towards devices with more complex responses called full-space metasurfaces where an independent functionality at two different frequencies can be obtained.Prof Beruete's current research interests include terahertz sensing and communication technology, including metamaterials, plasmonics, extraordinary transmission structures, leaky-wave antennas, nanoantennas, and, in general, quasi-optical devices. He has authored more than 130 indexed articles, 5 book chapters, and more than 300 conference communications (several invited). He holds three patents. Prof. Beruete was a recipient of the Ph.D. Prize from UPNA for the Best Doctoral Thesis from 2006 to 2007, the Research Prize UPNA for the best scientific contribution made during 2017 and 2018 in the areas of exact, biological, medical, and technological sciences, three CST University Publication awards for the best international journal publication using CST in 2005, 2012, and 2016, the XII Talgo Award of Technological Innovation in 2011, and several awards of international conferences. He is a reviewer for more than 50 international journals.
