A conversation across the tradition between two distinguished church leaders in known for their work in peace and reconciliation

The latest in our series of online events of conversations about encounters across the Orthodox-Evangelical traditions, we welcome His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos, the Coptic Archbishop of London, and The Right Rev Christopher Cocksworth, the Anglican Bishop of Coventry who will talk about their journeys and work in developing cooperation in mission between Orthodox and Evangelical Christians in the UK.

The Right Rev Dr Christopher Cocksworth, Bishop of Coventry, read Theology at the University of Manchester. After teaching Religious Studies and Economics in secondary education, he trained for ordination and pursued doctoral studies. Bishop Christopher has served in parochial and chaplaincy ministry and in theological education, latterly as Principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge. In 2010, he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity by the University of London for his services to education. He has written a number of theological books and articles and is currently working on Mary: Bearer of Life, to be published by SCM Press.Bishop Christopher was a member of the Church of England Liturgical Commission from 1996 – 2006, Co-Chair of the Joint Implementation Commission for the Anglican-Methodist Covenant from 2009 – 2014, and Chair of the Faith and Order Commission from 2012 - 2022. From 2017 he chaired the Co-ordinating Group responsible for the creation of the ‘Living in Love and Faith’ teaching and learning resources which were launched in November 2020, for which Bishop Christopher was granted the Lambeth Doctorate of Divinity. Bishop Christopher entered the House of Lords in January 2013 where he contributes on international matters, education, and ethics of beginning and end of life; he also seeks to give voice to life on the ground in Coventry and Warwickshire. He is the recipient of the Großes Verdienstkreuz of the Federal Republic of Germany for his work on peace and reconciliation.Christopher is married to Charlotte, and they have a large family. Among his hobbies is organic fruit and vegetable gardening.

His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos is the first Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London, having served as General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom since 1999, and as a monk priest from 1995-1999. His Eminence was delegated by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark, to represent the Church in the United Kingdom at the ecumenical and official level as Papal Legate, and thus conferred him with the ecclesial title of Archbishop of London. Having commenced his pastoral ministry in the United Kingdom in 1995 as a parish priest, Archbishop Angaelos was consecrated a General Bishop in 1999 by His Holiness, the late Pope Shenouda III, with whom he served as private secretary. He was Proclaimed Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of London by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, and the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church, during a historic service at St Bishoy Monastery in Wadi-El-Natrun, Egypt in 2017. Archbishop Angaelos has been conferred the Lambeth Cross for Ecumenism by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Coventry Cross of Nails for Reconciliation. Among other roles, His Eminence is President of Bible Society and Co-founder and Co-chair of the Lausanne-Orthodox Initiative. He held the role of Orthodox President of Churches Together in England (CTE) from 2017-2021 and Moderator of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI) from 2015-2021Archbishop Angaelos is widely recognised for his extensive advocacy work, and as a result he was conferred the honour of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for ‘Services to International Religious Freedom.’ He specialises in initiatives relating to advocacy, international religious freedom and development work, and is a member of, and chairs, numerous local, national and international bodies dealing with these matters. He is founder and convener of the Asylum Advocacy Group which works closely in partnership with the All Party Parliamentary Group on International Religious Freedom or Belief. He has visited refugee camps in Greece, Lebanon, Kurdistan and Jordan, and continues to work tirelessly to promote collaboration across the whole spectrum of his official, ecumenical and inter-religious engagements, to facilitate the support of and assistance to those in greatest need and suffering persecution and displacement.Archbishop Angaelos was born in Egypt and emigrated to Australia in his early childhood with his family. After obtaining his degree in Political Science, Philosophy and Sociology, he continued on to postgraduate studies in law while working in the same field. In 1990 he returned to Egypt to the Monastery of St Bishoy in Wadi-El-Natroun where he was consecrated a monk by the late Pope Shenouda III and served as his private secretary until 1995 when he was delegated to serve in the United Kingdom. He was proclaimed Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of London on 11 November 2017 in Egypt, and enthroned over the new Diocese on 18 November 2017 at the Cathedral of Saint George in England.

His Eminence is currently:President of Bible Society; Chair of the Council of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland; Co-chair of the Anglican-Oriental Orthodox International Commission; Co-chair of the Anglican-Oriental Orthodox Regional Forum; Co-founder and Co-chair of the Catholic-Oriental Orthodox Regional Forum; Co-founder and Co-chair of the Lausanne-Orthodox Initiative (with Mrs Leslie Doll); Moderator of the Churches’ Inter-Religious Network for CTBI; Ecumenical participant of the Church of England General Synod; President of Christians Aware; 	Chairman of SAT 7 International Council and Executive Board; Member of the Coptic Delegation to the World Council of Churches; Member of Christian Solidarity Worldwide Board of Reference; Founder and Director of Refcemi, The Coptic Orthodox Office for Advocacy and Public Policy; 	Founder and Convener of the Asylum Advocacy Group; Scholar-Consultant on the Christian-Muslim Forum; Founder and Chair of Foundations for Hope.Previously:World Council of Churches Central Committee Member 2013-2022; Churches Together in England President 2017-2021; Churches Together in Britain and Ireland Moderator 2015-2021.His Eminence is Patron of:Embrace The Middle East; Awareness Foundation; The Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary; The Apostolic Order of St Hadrian of Canterbury; The SAT 7 Trust UK.
