Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire who are living with a life-limiting illness.  Our care and services are provided free of charge to patients from our new location at Shelford Bottom, Cambridge and theAlan Hudson Day Treatment Centrein Wisbech, North Cambridgeshire.We deliver care to over 1,000 patients each year through our specialist palliative care Inpatient Unit, Day Therapy and Community including Hospice at Home Services, helping our patients and their loved ones to make every moment count.We would not be able to provide all of these services, without the generosity of our supporters, donors, local businesses, community groups and all those who undertake fundraising activities or who give up their time to volunteer from the local and wider community.  We are grateful for their support and involvement

IntroductionThis course aims to develop your skills and confidence when communicating with patients and families at the end of life. The follow up day is used to reflect on practice and review personal progress. This course requires contribution from participants for a range of activities which may include the use of video and working with an actor.This Study Day is aimed at:Suitable for registered healthcare professionals, who are caring for palliative patients and their families.We use a range of experiential techniques to:<ul><li>To understand the importance of effective communication and the consequences of poor communication</li><li>Identify blocking and facilitating strategies used when communicating</li><li>Explore the impact of these strategies on communication at the end of life</li><li>Help participants to develop competence and confidence to discuss emotional concerns with patients and families</li><li>Practice communication skills</li><li>Explore the skills used when dealing with difficult scenarios at the end of life </li><li>Help participants feel more confident to have end of life discussions with patients and families </li><li>Discuss approaches to advance care planning discussions</li><li>Explore the impact of working with patients at the end of life on the professional, and look at strategies to manage this</li></ul> Location: Education &amp; Conference Centre, Arthur Rank Hospice, Cherry Hinton Road, Shelford Bottom, Cambridge, CB22 3FB. The Education &amp; Conference Centre at the hospice is fully accessible for wheelchair users and those with disabilities, The Centre is on the first floor accessible by a lift. Directions and Visitor Parking to the Education &amp; Conference Centre By Car: If you are using Sat Nav please use the P&amp;R postcode CB22 3 AB as some sat navs do not currently recognise the location of the new hospice. A map with directions is avaialbe at http://www.arhc.org.uk/contact-us.asp.Car Parking: Delegates and visitors to the Education &amp; Conference Centre should park at the Babraham Road Park and Ride located next to the hospice and use the footpath to the centre. Car parking at the Park and Ride is free for up to 18 hours. The car park at the Hospice is reserved for patients, families and Blue Badge holders only. By Public Transport/Taxi: Cambridge railway station is approximately 3 miles from the Hospice. Taxis are available outside the entrance to the station or buses run from the city centre/railway station/Addenbrookes to the Babraham Park &amp; Ride.
