Patient and public involvement (PPI) in research (also known as service user/lay involvement) refers to an active partnership between patients and/or members of the public and researchers. Effectively involving members of the public in research increases the relevance and quality of research.

As part of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West Midlands' commitment to capacity building around PPIE, we have set up a monthly PPI Journal Club. The PPI Journal Club aims to provide an opportunity for collective learning for all members of the ARC WM community.

Each month, an article, blog or resource will be identified as the subject of discussion. A member of the ARC WM PPIE team will lead the session with an overview of their reflections on the piece, with the remainder of the time being allocated to group discussion amongst attendees.

On Wednesday 18th January (13:00 - 13:50), Caroline Jackson, Research Fellow within the University of Birmingham's School of Social Policy, will lead the third of this monthly series. The focus of discussion will be 'Co-research with older people: Perspectives on impact' (Littlechild, Tanner and Hall, 2015). Using case studies, this paper provides a critical account of the impact of a participatory approach at different stages of a research project, evaluating this from the perspective of different stakeholders.
