Does organisational coaching support women at mid-career?

The World Economic Forum, in their Global Gender Gap report (2016), conclude ‘female talent remains one of the most underutilised business resources’ (p.28). Female employees are most likely to experience underutilisation of their skills and experience at mid-career (O’Neil et. al., 2015). This underutilisation is often due to interpersonal biases, also known as subconscious stereotyping, held by many decision makers at senior levels of an organisation (Hoobler et al, 2009; Metz & Kulik, 2014). Such biased beliefs can confine women to unfulfilling roles and limit their opportunities for advancement, motivating talented women to opt out of their workplaces to pursue careers that better align with their goals for fulfilling jobs and work-life balance (Parke, 2012; Ely, Stone & Ammerman, 2014). Scholars define mid-career as a transition period (Levinson, 1978), a time of reflection such as exploring values and interests (Bussell, 2008; Hall, 1986) and endurance, doing what it takes to get it all done (O’Neil & Bilimoria, 2005). My research responds to a call for future research to examine the impact of organisational coaching to ‘assist women in managing their work contexts, work–life integration, and life/career-stage issues’ (O’Neil, Hopkins, Bilimoria, 2015, p.272). Drawing upon the Kaleidoscope Career Model (Mainiero & Sullivan, 2005), my research explores the extent to which organisational coaching supports women in the workplace who are juggling both a career and life responsibilities.
