This inaugural lecture presents a critical analysis of education policy processes over a sixty-year span.  During this time, the educational landscape has seen a seismic shift in its organisation, moving from a social democratic welfarist approach to a culture of performance-based accountability.  Successive governments in Britain have reformed and restructured education introducing managerialism, marketisation and privatisation in the pursuit of efficiency, effectiveness and enterprise and increasing concerns with service quality, performance and measurable outcomes.Gill examines the complex relationship between externally driven change and professional practice and considers the interplay between neoliberalism, national policy endeavors and the lived experience of policies.  Gill draws on examples from her own education and academic career as a university researcher to examine selectively some of the profound and far-reaching changes in education which have implications for pupils, parents, teachers and leaders in schools, and students and academics in higher education.As such, Gill hopes there will be something of interest for everyone, as they too reflect on the lived experiences of education policy processes.
