Meet Nao, the robot helping assess mental wellbeing in children

Cambridge Computer Science Department

Parents can bring along their children to meet Nao, a robot that could be used to help support children's wellbeing.

Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge

This is event is part of the Department of Computer Science and Technology Open Day. Researchers here are interested in developing 'social robots' that can successfully interact with humans and carry out tasks such as helping us assess and manage our wellbeing. In this event, parents and children can meet the researchers who - in collaboration with colleagues in the University's Department of Psychiatry - are involved in a project to see if robots could effectively be used to support children's wellbeing. 'Nao' is a small robot and children taking part in the study answer the questions Nao asks them by pressing buttons on its feet. At this workshop, children and their parents can have the chance to meet and interact with Nao in a 10-minute, one-to-one session. Nao will introduce itself and greet participants (including offering to bump fists with them) before asking initial questions like "How was your day?" to help break the ice and put participants at their ease during the session. Nao will then perform a picture task, displaying a picture on a screen and asking participants questions such as "What do you see in the picture?", "What do you think happened before the picture?" and "What do you think happened after the picture?". Researchers working on the project will explain to parents the potential for using Nao to aid the evaluation of children’s mental wellbeing and talk about the results they obtained in a previous study. AccessThe Department of Computer Science and Technology is based in the Willam Gates Building 15 JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0FD. There is step-free access into the building and lifts up to the 1st floor where this session will take place.Directions and parking The Department is accessible via public transport.
