Seeing the woods for the trees: visualising environmental data

Cambridge Computer Science Department

How we can visualise environmental data in fun, engaging and interactive ways in order to understand it better.

Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge

This is event is part of the Department of Computer Science and Technology Open Day. Increasingly, councils and governments across the UK are making data about our local environments available through online platforms. But the data is often in forms that describe the information in raw detail - but don't help people see the larger patterns and insights. The Cambridge Centre for Carbon Credits is working on a range of nature-based solutions to sequester carbon, combat deforestation and protect biodiversity. Co-run by the Departments of Computer Science and Technology, Zoology and Plant Sciences, one of Centre's big challenges is visualising environmental data in meaningful ways that can help us dig into and analyse the information and draw conclusions from it. In this workshop, Centre researcher Patrick Ferris will use open-source software to show ways in which we can visualise environmental data in fun, engaging and interactive ways in order to understand it better.AccessThe Department of Computer Science and Technology is based in the Willam Gates Building 15 JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0FD. There is step-free access into the building and lifts up to the 1st floor where this session will take place.Directions and parking The Department is accessible via public transport. It is a 15-minute walk from Madingley Road Park & Ride. The 'U' bus stops on Madingley Road, nearby the building.
