The ecological economist, Herman Daly, died this October at the age of 84 - this event will remember and celebrate his life and work.

<h3></h3><h3>Summary</h3>Herman Daly died this October at the age of 84. In its obituary the New York Times said: “Perhaps the best-known ecological economist, he faulted his mainstream peers for failing to account for the environmental harm growth can bring.” Perhaps more important, he co-founded a whole new school of economic thought that acknowledges natural resources and the environment as the foundation of all human wealth and well-being, and works through the profound implications of this for all aspects of the economy and society more broadly.This UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources seminar event will remember and celebrate Herman’s life and work. It is being co-hosted by UCL’s Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR) and Institute for Global Prosperity (ISP). Two of the speakers will be Professor Robert Costanza, who co-founded with Herman in 1989 the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE) and Professor Paul Ekins (ISR), who is one of the UK’s best known ecological economists. The event will be introduced by the Institutes’ two Directors, Professor Jim Watson (ISR) and Professor Henrietta Moore (IGP) and feature expert thinkers in the field. The event will start at 1730hrs on Wednesday 18th January, and will be followed by a reception in Central House, Bloomsbury, from 1930-2000hrs.<h3>Speakers</h3>Professor Robert Costanza is Professor of Ecological Economics at the Institute for Global Prosperity (IGP) at University College London (UCL). He is a Fellow in the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in the UK, and is an Overseas Expert in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He is also currently a Senior Fellow at the Stockholm Resilience Centre in Stockholm, Sweden, an Affiliate Fellow at the Gund Institute at the University of Vermont, and a deTao Master of Ecological Economics at the deTao Masters Academy in Shanghai, China and an Honorary Professor at Australian National University.He is co-founder and past-president of the International Society for Ecological Economics and was founding chief editor of the society’s journal Ecological Economics. He currently serves on the editorial board of ten other international academic journals. He is also founding editor in chief of Solutions, a unique hybrid academic/popular journal and editor in chief of the Anthropocene Review. Professor Costanza is the author or co-author of over 600 scientific papers and 28 books. His work has been cited more than 130,000 times in Google Scholar with an h-index of 136. More than 350 interviews and reports on his work have appeared in various popular media and he has written over 75 articles for the popular press.Professor Paul Ekins OBE is Professor of Resources and Environment Policy at UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources. From 2004-2014 he was a Co-Director of the UK Energy Research Centre, and from 2014-19 its Deputy Director, leading on its Energy Resources theme, with research publications on low-carbon futures, fossil fuels and hydrogen. In addition, he is a member of UNEP&#x27;s International Resource Panel and was a lead author on its publications on resource efficiency and mineral resource governance. From 2005-10 he was Chairman of the Government-funded National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP), the UK’s most successful programme to improve resource productivity. From 2002-2008 he was a Member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. From 1997-2005 he was a specialist adviser to the Environmental Audit Committee of the House of Commons, from 2003-2007 was a Member of the Government’s Sustainable Energy Policy Advisory Board, and in 2007 was a Specialist Adviser to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Climate Change Bill. He has extensive experience consulting for business, government and international organisations, which has included over 50 projects and consultancies over the last ten years, and many advisory positions. From 2015-18 he was a member of the European Commission&#x27;s High-Level Panel on the European Decarbonisation Pathways Initiative. From 2017-19 he was Co-Chair of UN Environment&#x27;s sixth edition of the Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6), following the publication of which he has been Co-Chair of UNEP&#x27;s GEO-for-Business initiative. He is also Co-Chair of the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP)&#x27;s Research Committee on Natural Capital. In 1994 Paul Ekins received a Global 500 Award ‘for outstanding environmental achievement’ from the United Nations Environment Programme. In 2015 he was awarded an OBE in the UK&#x27;s New Year&#x27;s Honours List for services to environmental policy.Kate Raworth is an ecological economist focused on making economics fit for 21st century realities. She is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries and author of the best-selling book, Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think like a 21st Century Economist, which has been translated into more than 20 languages. Kate is also the co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab, which is putting these ideas into action with communities, cities, businesses, and educators. She teaches at Oxford University&#x27;s Environmental Change Institute and is Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.Tim Jackson is an ecological economist and writer. Since 2016 he has been Director of the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP) at the University of Surrey in the UK.. From 2004 to 2011 he was Economics Commissioner for the UK Sustainable Development Commission where his work culminated in the publication of Prosperity without Growth (2009/2017) which was subsequently translated into 18 foreign languages worldwide. It was named as a Financial Times ‘book of the year’ in 2010 and was UnHerd’s economics book of the decade in 2019. His latest book Post Growth – life after capitalism was published by Polity Press in 2021 and won the 2022 Eric Zencey Prize for Economics. In 2016, Tim was awarded the Hillary Laureate for exceptional international leadership in sustainability. In addition to his academic work, Tim is an award-winning dramatist with numerous radio-writing credits for the BBC.Chairs: Professor Henrietta Moore is the Founder and Director of the Institute for Global Prosperity.
