Resisting welfare state violence and documenting evidence for justice: Sharing learnings from the Deaths by Welfare project

The <a href="https://healingjusticeldn.org/deaths-by-welfare-project/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Deaths by Welfare Project</a>, at Healing Justice Ldn, investigates deaths linked to welfare reform and the violence of state austerity in the UK. The aim of the project is to make visible the slow and bureaucratic violence of the State, and to contextualise welfare related deaths as issues of disability, spatial, racial and economic justice. Integral to this work is honouring, uplifting and learning from disabled people’s lived experience and resistance.

In this seminar, Dr. China Mills, the lead investigator for Deaths by Welfare, will introduce the project, its background, initial outcomes, and ongoing lessons. Rick Burgess will talk about the longstanding activism of disabled people in relation to welfare reform and discuss the significance of the project in the current context. Finally, Dr. Monica Sharman will speak about her experiences of the intersections of health and welfare as a doctor, what she has learned from people with lived experience, and about campaigning with Medact. She and China will then discuss the findings from a workshop co-facilitated by Deaths by Welfare and Medact, on healthcare workers&#x27; reflections of witnessing harms, of complicity, and of allyship. <a href="https://www.city.ac.uk/about/people/academics/china-mills" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">China Mills</a> is a Senior Lecturer at City, University of London where she researches and teaches global mental health and public health, with a focus on state and corporate production of harm, distress and deaths by suicide. China is author of the book<a href="https://www.routledge.com/Decolonizing-Global-Mental-Health-The-psychiatrization-of-the-majority/Mills/p/book/9781848721609" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Decolonizing Global Mental Health: the Psychiatrization of the Majority World</a> (published in 2014 by Routledge). Monica Sharman is a doctor working in A&amp;E, currently studying an MSc in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene &amp; Tropical Medicine. She is a member of<a href="https://www.medact.org/membership/groups/economic-justice-health/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Medact’s economic justice &amp; health group. </a><a href="https://rickb.earth" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rick Burgess</a> is a disabled activist based in Greater Manchester, he co-founded the <a href="https://wowpetitiondotcom.wordpress.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">WOW Petition</a> calling for a Cumulative Impact Assessment of welfare reform, he co-founded <a href="https://manchesterdpac.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Manchester Disabled People Against Cuts</a> and is an admin of <a href="https://recoveryinthebin.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Recovery In The Bin</a>. He works at the GM Coalition of Disabled People and the Lived Experience Advisory Board at the Economic and Social Research Council <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk/csmh" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre For Society And Mental Health</a> at King’s College. He has survived several WCA’s.The event will be chaired by <a href="https://wcceh.org/meet-the-team/research-fellows/cristian-montenegro/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Cristian Montenegro</a>, Research Fellow at the WCCEH.
