50. Python Glasgow Talks - June, 2017

Python Glasgow meets on the2ndTuesdayof each month. Events such as talks and dojos will be announced on themailing list,twitter accountand listed below.

Python Glasgow

Join us for a night of Python talks at the central Skyscanner office in Glasgow. We will have two talks (details below). Skyscanner will be providing us with food and drinks.
Doors open at 17:30, please arrive by 18:30 at the latest. Pizza will arrive at 18:00. First talks will start at 18:30.
Please note: 155 St Vincent Street reception is locked from 17:30 onwards. To access the building please wait patiently by the front door a member of Skyscanner will then be able to unlock the door and provide access. Access can only be guaranteed up until 18:30.
 
Talk 1: Awaken your Home with Home Assistant by Barry Williams
About the Speaker:
Barry is a software developer at Linn Products, mainly a C# developer with some nodejs on the side. Day job involves writing backend services to provide internet services to connected HiFi devices using AWS, Docker, Typescript and C#. After family, a keen hobbyist and contributor to the OSS community whose Github profile is at github.com/bazwilliams, even occasionally write blogs at blog.bjw.me.uk, but more commonly on twitter @bazwilliams.
The Talk:
I'd like to talk about a Home Automation service I started using about a year ago called Home Assistant (home-assistant.io). This connects many smart things in your house such as light bulbs, media players, tvs, thermostats and sensors. Control ranges from simple automation (sensor above certain value) to voice control using Alexa.
I've contributed a few things to this repo such as support for Linn product's devices so they can be controlled by HA. Home Assistant is written in python and has a very active contributor base. New plugins are added everyweek, I'll give an overview of how to contribute with some examples of mine.
 
Talk 2: Python's little brother, MicroPython by Daniel Černý
About me:
I am currently studying second year of HND Mechanical Engineering at City of Glasgow College. I have started to learn Python because I want to transfer into Mechatronics and found Python to be beginner friendly programming language. I am also interested in electronics and robotics, which requires knowledge of programming language.
The Talk:
I am going to introduce MicroPython. I will talk about what is MicroPython capable off and where could we find it. If we have some spare time, I could run some examples. I would like to also mention, what are my plans with MicroPython in a future.
