The Salon Presents... Embodiment and Mental Health

The Salon is a monthly virtual discussion for everyone, and is part of the University of Birmingham's Mental Health Humanities initiative.

This month The Salon welcomes two provocateurs. Grace Lucas and Matt Hayler will be in conversation about embodiment and mental health. Come and join the discussion!Grace Lucas is a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health and Society at the School of Health and Psychological Sciences, City, University of London. As a researcher working between health sciences and medical humanities perspectives, her particular interest is in embodiment, which she theorises helps to dismantle the mind/body dualism inherent in clinical framings of mental illness. She is an expert by experience in eating disorders, publishing a bestselling account of her experiences, Thin (Penguin, 2007) and a yoga teacher, with a longstanding interest in bodywork practices for mental health.a﻿ndMatt Hayler is associate professor in contemporary literature and digital cultures at the University of Birmingham and co-directs the Centre for Digital Cultures. His research and teaching explore human entanglement with technological artefacts and other non-human actors, drawing on the cognitive and digital humanities and critical posthumanism. Matt edits the Bloomsbury Academic series Posthumanism in Practice with Dr Danielle Sands and Professor Christine Daigle. This monthly virtual discussion is part of the Mental Health and Medical Humanities Initiative, instigated by the Institute for Mental Health, but owned by scholars across campus at the University of Birmingham. Online each month, speakers act as ‘provocateurs’, offering brief 5-minute presentations that might be rooted in a reading, a piece of art, or a key theme from their research. The Salon aims to recreate stimulating, interdisciplinary discussions, which maximise ideas and collaborations and slot into busy schedules.
