The Gallery at Green & Stone is excited to be joined by Rachel Mercer from the Royal Drawing School conducting this unique drawing class.

Tutor: Rachel Mercer Summary: Looking at a range of contemporary and traditional artists who have been fascinated by the human head as a subject, this class will explore the portrait through drawing. Participants will work with pencil and charcoal to investigate a variety of approaches to mark making, considering both linear and tonal approaches. We will examine drawn portraits including those made by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Lucian Freud, Kathe Kollwitz, Frank Auerbach and Alice Neal. Suitable for all levels, including beginners. Drawing materials to be included and a 10% discount in our renowned art materials shop at the end of the class!This is a fantastic opportunity to be trained by a tutor from the Royal Drawing School. The class will take place in our gallery, showing the work of Royal Drawing School alumni, for maximum inspiration.

Rachel Mercer b. 1989 Cambridgeshire. Mercer holds a BA from Cardiff School of Art and completed the Drawing Year in 2013. Based in London she balances her time between studio practice and teaching. Rachel has taught on the young artist's programme since 2013 and on the public programme since 2019.Mercer’s paintings juxtapose everyday scenes and classical themes creating haunting images where the subject fades into the sensuality of the medium. The figures in her work move and dissolve across the canvas, simultaneously creating a sense of disappearance and presence.She has exhibited in the UK and China. Stand-out exhibitions include: Christie's London, 2013, Mercer Chance Gallery and Mandell's Gallery in 2018, San Mei Gallery in 2019, Fitzrovia Gallery and Aleph Contemporary 2022 . Shortlisted for the Ruth Borchard Prize (2020), longlisted for the Waverton Art prize, prize winner of the Hampstead Art Society prize, 2022).
