Intercultural Learning for Global Engagement Conference 2023

This session explores ethical reasoning as a site for intercultural engagement and learning within the context of decision-making. The session will introduce participants to JMU's unique strategy for ethical decision-making, the Eight Key Questions (8KQ), which function as reminders of ethical considerations (Fairness, Outcomes, Responsibility, Character, Liberty, Empathy, Authority, and Rights) as an aid and check-list for making better, more ethical decisions. The advantage of an 8KQ approach is that it does not privilege one consideration over any other and it does not privilege any one historically and culturally conditioned perspective or position over any other. This flexibility, then, offers a rich platform for engaging in intercultural engagement and learning as the consideration of, say, "responsibility" or "authority" or "liberty" is very different in different cultural contexts. In order to keep the conversation grounded, the session will explore an ethical scenario -- a realistic thought-experiment of an ethical situation in which a decision has to be made by the group of participants -- in which the participants will engage each other and hear each other's considerations in order to make a decision. The session will necessarily therefore be interactive.SpeakerChristian Early, James Madison University (USA)Christian Early has been teaching philosophy for over twenty years. He joined Ethical Reasoning in Action at James Madison University five years ago and is currently the interim director. His research focuses on moral perception and habituating ethical reasoning. Originally from Denmark, he lives in Harrisonburg with his wife and two of their three sons – his oldest son is away at Lund University studying mathematics.
