Keynote Talk : Principles and Practical Solutions for Intercultural LearningIn this keynote presentation, Kris Acheson-Clair will be engaging participants in thinking through several key principles that have emerged in her work internationalizing Purdue University. The session will begin by exploring the intersection of intercultural competence development and global learning, with a focus on the first principle: Global learning both demands and provides opportunity for developing intercultural competence. Attendees will have the opportunity to co-construct with Dr. Acheson-Clair a visual organizer to capture some of the ways in which intercultural competence and other intended outcomes of global learning experiences are mutually reinforcing. The conversation will then move on to a second principle: Global contact does not guarantee intercultural competence development. Dr. Acheson-Clair will synthesize contemporary research from education abroad, virtual exchange, and on-campus contexts to demonstrate the fallacy of commonly-made assumptions that participation equates to learning. In this segment of the keynote, participants will hear (and can contribute) examples of both best practices that promote intercultural development and methods of assessing to what extent learners are developing. Finally, the session will end with a third principle: Institutions prioritizing intercultural competence development will need to negotiate a balance between depth and scale in their global learning opportunities. With case studies of scaling up intercultural learning to reach more students without sacrificing meaningfulness, Dr. Acheson-Clair will demonstrate the tension between quality and quantity and guide attendees in strategizing a way forward in this difficult balancing act.Keynote SpeakerKris Acheson-Clair, PhDDirector, Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and ResearchPurdue University (USA)A﻿bout the SpeakerDr. Kris Acheson-Clair earned a PhD in Intercultural Communication from Arizona State University in 2008. Before coming to Purdue University in 2016, she served as a faculty member in Applied Linguistics at Georgia State University for 7 years and was awarded a yearlong Fulbright Scholar grant from the U.S. State Department to research and teach in Honduras in 2015. At Purdue, Dr. Acheson-Clair now directs the Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research (CILMAR) and holds a courtesy faculty position in the Brian Lamb School of Communication. CILMAR's mission is to support intercultural competence development for everyone in the Purdue community. Led by Dr. Acheson-Clair, CILMAR's staff works with faculty and staff at Purdue to embed intercultural learning across the curriculum and to produce cutting-edge intercultural research. CILMAR’s flagship program is the science gateway of resources for interculturalists, the Intercultural Learning Hub (www.hubicl.org). Dr. Acheson-Clair is a well-published scholar. While her early studies examined silence across cultures, her more recent research projects strive to identify the best strategies to develop and assess intercultural competence, including innovative externally-funded projects to develop virtual reality simulations that foster the attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary to interact successfully across cultural differences.
