Measuring change in students’ world-views as evidence of effective teaching

INU's Intercultural Learning for Global Engagement Conference 2023

This session will look at two approaches to measuring the change in students' world views from two different INU member universities.Rovira i Virgili University (URV), Spain employ the Beliefs Events and Values Inventory (BEVI) tool to access this change. BEVI is familiar to some INU universities, like James Madison University (USA) and Hiroshima University (Japan). Now in its third edition, the BEVI is beginning to be taken up in Europe. It offers teachers and administrators a deep, immediate insight into the diverse worldviews among students groups and cohorts, and when testing groups over time can offer evidence of real change in students’ outlook. In relation to the interest of institutions to develop students’ soft-skills, so-called XXIst-century competences, the BEVI can help us understand the effectiveness of our programmes, and provide data as the basis of institutional dialogue about Values-based Education.
