Intercultural Learning for Global Engagement Conference 2023

Often global products are developed for particular end-user groups and in some cases cultural considerations are not taken into account. Some examples of the lack of cultural awareness were considered very offensive and caused damage. What if we aided future professionals, product designers, engineers, technologist, scientists, in the development of their cultural awareness to enable them to develop and ask appropriate questions as part of the product creation process? What if students (and teachers) are asked to shift perspective, to interact, and to work in an international setting that requires (mutual) responsibility? In this session, we plan to illustrate different levels of our practical experience with a scaffolded process that incorporates self-evaluation, reflection activities (individually and corporately), and intentional time for students to share their thoughts with one another and to complete project work.The S﻿peakersN﻿iki Kasis, Center for Teaching and Learning, European University Viadrina (Germany)Niki Kasis is an academic staff member and lecturer at the Centre for Teaching and Learning of the European University Viadrina, with a thematic focus on the development of intercultural competence, inclusion and accessibility in higher education, student engagement, project management and communication skills. She is a trainer and supervisor of Viadrina’s Peer Tutoring Programme, a capacity-building and certificate programme for students, who offer study support and workshops to their peers. She is engaged in various higher education networks where the INU’s Intercultural Learning and Global Engagement is one. D﻿r Kyle Gipson, Associate Professor, College of Integrated Science and Engineering, James Madison University (USA)Kyle Gipson is an Associate Professor at James Madison University in the Department of Engineering located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. He has taught courses pertaining to topics for first-year engineering, materials science and engineering, engineering design, systems thinking and engineering leadership development that was fused with intercultural awareness themes. Currently, he is the Coordinator for First Year Engineering Excellence and a Center for Faculty Innovation Faculty Associate in the Career Planning Area. He has a PhD in Polymer, Fiber Science from Clemson University. His research background is in the synthesis of polymer nanocomposites and engineering education.
