Historical Perspectives a Scottish-based postgraduate ran network, fostering discussions on historical-based research by PGR students.

This session in our 2022/2023 seminar series features two speakers. I’m doing my PhD from a little wooden hut located in the northern-most town in Greenland! Not really, but that’s what it might feel like when you’re doing a part-time and remote PhD. You feel like you’re the only one in this situation, because let’s face it, the people who you see daily – your partner or child, friends and family, don’t understand the emotions and the struggle you’re going through. When you see mails and alerts popping up for social gatherings, workshops and screenings that are taking place in-person or at times when you are at work or taking care of your family, how do you deal with ‘FOMO’?Network like your life depends on it! Add ‘network building ‘as a skill to learn, or item on your PhD plan. I’m not talking about the network that’s core to your research, but the network outside the scope of your research that will be your eyes and ears on the ground, your advisors and your best confidants. And if you’re unsure or not comfortable networking, then offering to help or volunteering is a great way to grow the network. Add ‘networking’ as a category to the plan and under this plan, there can be subsections such as ‘purpose of network’, ‘mutual interest area’, ‘frequency of contact’, etc. When you’re a part-timer knowing you have a good network that consists of more than one person for different purposes, it can make the experience seem less daunting and lonesome.My name is Anee and I’m a first part-time PhD student based in Copenhagen, Denmark. I’m 38 years old, married and have a 4 year old daughter. There’s been a gap of nearly 15 years between my Masters and PhD where I’ve been focusing on my corporate career. For the last 10 years, I’ve been working in marketing and corporate communications, along with doing a few productions. My research focuses on – EU media policy to make sustainability and green certifications a requirement in the screen industry in Europe and I’m assigned to the School of Arts. My research in sustainability comes out of my personal interest in trying to make sustainability and green practices a way of life.My project seeks to address the absence and development of crucifixion iconography from the first to mid-fifth century CE. I will argue that although explicit artistic representations of the crucifixion of Christ are physically absent until the mid-fifth century, the crucifixion has a continual conceptual presence. In stark terms, the significance of the events of the cross has an underlying presence in the images and symbols that were used in the iconographical language of early Christian art and the crucifixion is alluded to implicitly through these images. In order to demonstrate this, my study assesses a range of artistic artefacts up until the mid-fifth century such as the signs and symbols used in the funerary context of the catacombs of Rome as this is where the earliest extant evidence of Christian iconography is. Representations of The Sacrifice of Isaac, The Three Youths in the Fiery Furnace, Jonah, Susannah and the Elders and Daniel in the Lion’s Den are also considered as allusions to the events of the cross because they are all united in symbolising salvation from death, along with symbols such as the Good Shepherd the Anchor, the Ship and the Orant, selected sarcophagi, apse paintings and images of Christ. The overall purpose of assessing these images is to uphold the argument that the emergence of crucifixion iconography reveals a steady evolution in its development, challenging the claim in the current field of scholarship that its initial absence is perplexing or that its appearance in the fifth century was sudden. The project uses interdisciplinary methodology to assess the complex interactions between art, politics and religion in Late AntiquityI am a mature PhD student of History and a full-time teacher and Head of Department of A Level Religious Studies at a large sixth form college in Winchester. I have been teaching in sixth forms for 27 years and been in my current role at Peter Symonds for 22 years. I also have a BA &amp; MA in Religious Studies and Theology. Although work keeps me very busy I have many other interests. I have an insatiable thirst for study, I also read fiction on a daily basis and am rarely found without a book in hand.
