Music in the University‘Music in the University’ is the umbrella term for all public facing music events that the University offers. It is a core public engagement offering for University of Glasgow: a key part of our civic engagement and important longstanding social and wellbeing initiative for our internal and external university communities.We provide free and affordable access to world class music from concerts and gigs, to learning and participation events, to research. All events are open for anyone to attend, regardless of any relationship with the University. The programme works closely with the internationally renowned professional Scottish music sector and has partner organisations both in the UK and beyond. We collaborate across all University of Glasgow departments, research initiatives, public facing conferences and events, development and alumni initiatives.

Allegro molto moderato</p><p>II.	Lento</p><p>III.	Allegro molto</p><p>In the spring of 1927, Henriëtte Bosmans began lessons with Willem Pijper, at that time one of the most sought-after composition teachers in the Netherlands. Shortly thereafter she started working on a string quartet, which she dedicated to Pijper and noted his birthday, September 8, 1927, as the day of completion. The first performance was on January 28th, 1928 in the Recital Hall of the Concertgebouw by the Amsterdam String Quartet, the members of which were all part of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Press reactions were mostly favourable but didn&#x27;t fail to acknowledge the &#x27;influence of Debussy and Ravel&#x27; which can be heard throughout the work. </p><p>The first movement &#x27;Allegro molto moderato&#x27; opens with a unison lyrical melody, played by the viola, which subsequently comes to fruition in all instruments. At &#x27;più vivo&#x27; another element is introduced; poignant and vibrant, also starting in unison but soon replaced again by the lyrical melody, which from this point on, however, always appears in combination with repetitive eighth notes. At a later stage, the poignant element reappears but again withdraws in favour of the lyricism, which continues to develop and, finally with strong accents, gradually comes to a halt. At the end, the tranquillity of the opening returns. The second movement, &#x27;Lento&#x27;, introduced by the first violin, is built on a theme with similarities to the lyrical melody of the first movement. The music is soothing: in addition to mild melodies and mellow sounds there are sustained tones in the cello part, at times creating a pastoral character. &#x27;Allegro molto&#x27;, the final movement, has a rousing rhythmic motif which is present from beginning to end. It forms the basis for a powerful melodic theme consisting of whole note intervals and is hence easily recognizable. Halfway through, approaching an almost sultry slow waltz, the rhythm is slightly tempered. Thereafter, the turbulent opening returns towards a grand climax.</p><p>Florence Price - String Quartet in A minor No.2</p><p>I.	Moderato</p><p>II.	Andante cantabile</p><p>III.	Juba – Allegro</p><p>IV.	Allegro</p><p>Florence Beatrice Price (1887-1953) was an African-American composer from Little Rock, Arkansas. Coming from a mixed-race background, she was able to pass herself off as Mexican in order to enrol at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, graduating in 1906 with degrees in organ and piano. Her career spanned nearly 50 years of teaching, performing and composition, with an output that includes dozens of works for organ and piano, four symphonies, myriad chamber works as well as works for voice.</p><p>Her String Quartet No. 2 in A minor is emblematic of her personal musical voice, which was trained rigorously in the European style yet inexorably steeped in the folk and slave music of the American Deep South. The first movement weaves around the oscillating figure that begins the piece, introduced by the second violin and passed occasionally through the other voices of the quartet, and carries the yearning first theme into more turbulent waters. The second movement uses a simpler motif of just two repeating notes, again in the second violin, to keep the ear anchored as Price takes us through her beautiful melodic writing. </p><p>The third movement, characteristically a dance movement in the European style of quartet writing, is given a twist: instead of a minuet or scherzo, we are presented with a “juba”. The juba originates from the rhythmic slave dances that were used to pass the time not used toiling on cotton plantations. Its rhythm is distinguished by heavy emphasis on the first beat of the bar, often followed by an unexpected highlighting of another beat. One gets the sense that the dancer is kept on their toes by the musicians!</p><p>The final movement is a proud and fiery rondo, punctuated twice by a mysterious melodic cadenza, first presented by the viola then again later on by the two violins.</p><p></p>
