Background on the Panel Members:
Nelson McCausland Former DUP MLA for North Belfast; Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure (2009–2011) and Minister for Social Development (2011–2014) Nelson McCausland was born in Belfast in 1951 and was educated at Belfast Royal Academy, Worcester College, Oxford, and Queen’s University Belfast. He worked as a teacher in a secondary school in Belfast and then later was the Northern Ireland organiser for an evangelical Christian organisation and the director of the Ulster-Scots Heritage Council. He was elected to Belfast City Council in 1989 and then in 2003 he was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly as a DUP MLA for North Belfast. He was a minister in the Northern Ireland Executive from 2009 to 2014. He writes a weekly column in the Belfast Telegraph and serves on the Northern Ireland Education Authority and several other public bodies.
Brid Rodgers Former Northern Ireland Executive Minister; former Irish Senator; founder member of the SDLP Born and brought up in Gaeltacht area of Donegal. Came to Northern Ireland 1960 on marriage to Antoin. Educated St Louis Covent, Monaghan and University College Dublin. (Degree in Modern Languages) Actively involved in early Civil Rights Movement with the Campaign for Social Justice and a member of NICRA executive. Founder member of SDLP. Chairman SDLP (1978-80). General Secretary (1980-83). Appointed to Irish Senate by Taoiseach Garrett Fitzgerald (1983-87). Chair of SDLP team in talks leading to Good Friday Agreement. Elected to Northern Ireland Assembly for Upper Bann Constituency 1998. Appointed Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development 1999. Elected Deputy Leader SDLP 2001. Retired from public life 2003.
Cllr Tim Attwood SDLP Councillor for West Belfast; Secretary, Civil Rights Commemoration Committee Born in 1963, Tim is married to Gemma and has three sons – Eoin, 10 and 7 year old twins Michael and Feargal. He studied Politics at Queen’s University Belfast (1983-1986) and was elected President of Queen’s University Students Union in 1987 and coordinated local and national student campaigns including major education rallies. In 1989 he was appointed Director of Citizens Advice Belfast. Tim has been a political activist in the SDLP for over 25 years. As the SDLP’s Director of Development he was responsible for political development, party organisation and election campaigns. He was central to the U2 Yes gig which brought John Hume, Bono and David Trimble together and was critical in winning the Good Friday Agreement referendum. Tim was elected to Belfast City Council in 1995 and is Leader of the SDLP Group. He took a lead role in designing a major social and economic investment package for Belfast and led the campaign for a £1billion Belfast City Region Deal. He has been active in numerous community and regeneration organisations and served on many public bodies. He is Belfast Chair of the Forum for Cities in Transition which brings together protagonists from divided cities in the promotion of peace-making and reconciliation. He has undertaken peace work in Kirkuk, Iraq, Kaduna in Nigeria and Uganda. He is the Secretary of the broad based Civil Rights 50th Anniversary Committee which has arranged 30 events to commemorate 50th Anniversary of Civil Rights, highlight the courage of the non-violent civil rights activists and address current human and civil rights issues today.
Dr Chris Reynolds Reader in Contemporary French and European Studies, Nottingham Trent University Dr Reynolds is French Subject Leader and teaches a wide variety of courses in French and European studies. For example, in French he contributes to the Year One Introduction to French Politics, Culture and Society module. In Year Two he leads a module entitled 'le Cas 68' which draws on his research into the events of May 1968. In Year Three he is Module Leader for 'La France et l'Europe' course. In European studies Dr Reynolds co-teaches two cinema modules: Year One Introduction to European Cinema; and Year Three European Cinema: Globalisation and Resistance. Before his appointment at NTU, Dr Reynolds completed two years on a temporary lectureship in French at the University of Bath where he taught a very wide range of modules from final year translation to international marketing from a French perspective. Dr Reynolds is a member of the <A HREF="http://www.ntu.ac.uk/apps/research/groups/22/home.aspx/centre/142228/overview/refrance_contemporary_french_studies" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">ReFrance</A> research group as well as Contesting Euro Visions. Dr Reynolds main research interests are in relation to the events of 1968. Having initially focussed on the French events of Mai 68, he has widened his analysis to examine the period from a European perspective. He has published a number of articles on the French events and his first monograph on the subject was published in 2011 (<A HREF="http://www.uwp.co.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">University of Wales Press</A>). He has also been involved in research on the events of 1968 in Northern Ireland and in 2015 he published his second monograph entitled Sous les paves…The Troubles: France, Northern Ireland and the European Collective memory of 1968 with Peter Lang. Dr Reynolds was a member of a 16-strong team of international researchers working on a <A HREF="https://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Leverhulme</A> / <A HREF="http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/Pages/Home.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">AHRC</A> project looking at the transnational nature of the 1968 events. The project, entitled 'Around 68', is led by prominent French historian Professor Robert Gildea (Oxford). The research outputs include a database of interviews with militants from the period, a special issue of <A HREF="http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/bloomsbury/cash" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Cultural and Social History</A> and a collaborative book to be published by <A HREF="http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Oxford University Press</A>. Dr Reynolds was nominated as a Champion of Academic Enterprise for the University for the 2010/11 year. For this role he was awarded buyout to enable him to concentrate on the development of an online resource for students undertaking placements abroad.
