Leon Vilaincour was born Leon Julius Pauker in Krakow in 1923. As a teenager, he moved to France with his mother, who stayed there while he went on to England on the eve of the Second World War. He won a scholarship to study at the Central School of Art and Crafts (now Central St Martin’s), though soon afterwards volunteered to join the British army. He was injured in training, and returned to his studies, before becoming an art teacher, initially at the Central School. From 1950 until 1988 he taught painting at Chelsea School of Art. His central activity, however, was his own painting, in oils and watercolour. He received an Arts Council Major Award in 1977, and the Lorne Award in 1981. He had four one-man shows within his lifetime, including at the Knoedler Kasmin Gallery and at the Serpentine Gallery. Vilaincour’s work is represented in several public collections, including the Tate. This presentation by Piers Baker will illustrate the wide range of his work. His paintings are predominantly figurative, encompassing vibrant reflections of culture, conflict and personalities, but not directly representational or narrative; at times, the figurative elements are hidden in what appears to be an abstract design. Many of the works are inspired by – or take motifs from – central European and French history, reflecting Vilaincour’s own roots, and ideas are frequently developed through series of works on the same general theme. Piers Baker is married to the artist’s daughter Maria Vilaincour Baker, and has been helping to catalogue Vilaincour’s work.
