Art historian Astrid Schmetterling will talk about Erna Pinner,  best known for the animal drawings that illustrated her own books

Erna Pinner (1890-1987) is best known for the animal drawings that illustrated her own books, such as Curious Creatures (1951) and Born Alive (1959), and those of renowned zoologists and natural historians. Based in Frankfurt am Main before the war, she settled in the UK in 1935 and in addition to her animal images produced many drawings of her travels to Southern Europe, Africa and South America. These are currently on show at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt in the exhibition <a href="https://www.juedischesmuseum.de/en/visit/detail/four-frankfurt-artists/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Back into the Light: Four Women Artists – Their Works. Their Paths</a>, to which Astrid Schmetterling has contributed a catalogue essay.Art historian Astrid Schmetterling is Senior Lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. She has written about early twentieth century German-Jewish artists such as Charlotte Salomon (2017) and Else Lasker-Schüler (2010), as well as contemporary international artists, such as Uriel Orlow (2017), Ulrike Grossarth (2011) and Arnold Dreyblatt (2007).
