Jane Pilcher shares the results of her study into the effects of mis-pronouncing and mis-spelling people's names.

Personal names signal people’s identities, including socio-cultural identities of ethnicity, nationality, language and religion. If names are misspelt/mispronounced, identities are misrepresented which may result in the affected person feeling disrespected, disempowered, excluded and/or othered. We are delighted to welcome Jane Pilcher, a leading expert on the sociology of names, who will deliver this workshop to illustrate these issues using findings from her study of the pronunciation of students’ names in higher education. You will get the opportunity to:
