The screening of Winnie Herbstein's Studword (2018, 18min) and Minutes (2019, 12min) will be followed by a Q&A with the director and curators of the exhibition Resistance in Residence. Resitance in Residence is a Travelling Gallery exhibition community-led about struggles for safe, affordable housing in Scotland curated by MScR students on the Collection and Curating Practices programme at the University of Edinburgh in partnership with the Centre for Research Collections. The exhibition features archival materials, audience responses and contemporary artworks by Winnie Herbstein, Joey Simons, Keira McLean, and Lucas Priest (The School of Pedestrian Culture) that explore past, present and future community efforts for fair housing conditions.Beginning as a discussion on gendered labour, Studwork looks loosely at the history of women working in construction and the formation of feminist living spaces. The film proposes alternative modes of learning as well as questioning who it is that builds the house, and who the home? Minutes draws on material from the archive of Take Root, a women’s self-build group from Glasgow in the 1990s. Working closely with minutes taken from the group’s meetings, moments were developed into scenarios and restaged by members of Slaghammers, a feminist welding group based at Glasgow Autonomous Space.
