An introduction to metamaterials, examples across multiple sectors and info on how metrology can enable innovation of new materials

Metamaterials are 3D structures engineered to have properties, in response to input such as light, mechanical forces or sounds, that are not possible with only their unstructured constituent materials. Metamaterial families include acoustic, photonic, and mechanical metamaterials. Metamaterials are increasingly being developed for industrial applications, for instance with applications in defence, space, health and sports. This webinar, hosted by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL)’s Manufacturers Measurement Network in partnership with the UK Metamaterials Network, will give an introduction to metamaterials, outline examples where metamaterials can play a role across multiple sectors, and highlight the role of metrology in enabling innovation of new materials such as metamaterials. With talks from Alastair Hibbins who is a Professor of Metamaterial Physics at the University of Exeter. He is Director of Exeter’s Centre for Metamaterials Research and Innovation, and is Principle Investigator of the EPSRC- and DSTL-funded UK Metamaterials Network. Alastair is the lead author of the Metamaterials Revolution EPSRC “Big Idea” which advocates the need for a national metamaterial programme. His own research interests are focused on microwave and acoustic metamaterials, and has a successful track record of EPSRC and industry funded programmes and projects, including, for example an International Centre to Centre collaboration on active metamaterials (“A-Meta”) with US and UK academics, industry and government.
