What’s next for planetary health research?

A﻿bout the Cambridge Planetary Health SeriesGlobal environmental change threatens our lives and civilisations like never before. Planetary health recognises that our existence health depends on flourishing natural systems. We are part of, not separate from, nature.Representing a collaboration between Darwin College, Cambridge Public Health, Cambridge Zero and the School of Clinical Medicine, this series of webinars will bring experts from across the world to speak to the University of Cambridge community and help us answer one key question: What should our role be in addressing planetary health challenges?Through these webinars, we will raise awareness of planetary health as a concept, identify synergies and areas of current and future collaboration in planetary health research, and help us position Cambridge in a global context. In doing this we must acknowledge past coloniality and look to develop better and more equitable ways of working with international communities.T﻿his event forms part of a wider series of seminars which will culminate in a face-to-face workshop in Cambridge on the 23rd of March.Open to all University of Cambridge members (researchers, staff and students) from any disciplineA﻿bout the speakersA﻿lastair Brown joined The Lancet Planetary Health as Editor-in-Chief in May 2019 after working at Nature Climate Change since its launch in 2010, where he oversaw the climate change impacts, vulnerability, and adaptation section of the journal. Before that he worked in a policy-facing role at the UK Climate Impacts Programme engaging with willing branches of government and the private sector on ways to adapt to unavoidable climate changes. He studied Environmental Science followed by a Masters in Global Environmental Change, both at the University of Plymouth (UK). His doctoral and postdoctoral research at the University of Southampton (UK) was in the field of palaeoclimatology. He has broad interests in the intersections of people and planet and the pressing challenges these pose.D﻿r. Sophia Lentzos joined the NIHR as its first ever Head of Sustainability in December 2022. Dr Lentzos has a lifelong passion for environmental causes and sustainability, starting her career in environmental conservation. She then trained as a medical doctor at Nottingham University and started Anaesthesia training in Wessex. Here she continued her passion for sustainability, working as part of the Green Guardian network for the Trust. She also founded the Wessex Green Anaesthesia Network (WES-GAN). In 2021-2022 she became one the first cohort of Chief Sustainability Officer’s Clinical Fellows in Greener NHS. She continued work on sustainable medicines and helped form a national working group for sustainable anaesthesia.D﻿r. Madeleine Thomson is Head of Impacts and Adaptation at the Wellcome Trust. Madeleine has over 25 years of research experience focused on large-scale, climate-sensitive, health interventions in Low- and Middle-income Countries. Prior to joining Wellcome, Madeleine worked as Senior Research Scientist at The International Research Institute for Climate and Society, Columbia University, where she directed the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on ‘Malaria Early Warning Systems and other Climate Sensitive Diseases’. She was also a Senior Research Scholar at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health. Her research has involved the development of new data, methodologies and tools for improving climate-sensitive health interventions with a focus on infectious disease, public health outcomes of hydrometeorological disasters and nutrition.
