Festival of Broadcasting

Our 'Festival of Broadcasting' celebrates 100 years of Scottish broadcasting. This programme of free events, talks and workshops will run from January to April at Kelvin Hall.

Broadcast Conversation: Gàidhlig and Scots on airScotland has three indigenous languages - how have Gàidhlig and Scots found their way on air in the last century? Join us for a conversation with Hugh Dan MacLennan, Lana Pheutan and Mary Ann Kennedy, chaired by Broadcaster in Residence, Alistair Heather.Hugh Dan MacLennan works mainly as a broadcaster and researcher in the fields of sport and Gaelic, specialising in commentary work in Gaelic and English on rugby, football and shinty. Following a career as a Gaelic teacher, he joined the BBC in 1983 and was a senior producer with the BBC when Radio nan Gàidheal was launched in 1985. He was a member of the Board of MG ALBA when the new television service was launched in 2008 and was the National Library of Scotland’s first ever Sportswriter in Residence in 2017.  Lana Pheutan is an actor, writer and director working in TV, film and theatre. Originally from the Isle of Skye she now works across Scotland in Gàidhlig and English. She has starred in Bannan, Func, OMC and Scot Squad and has written a short film for the European Broadcasting Union and MG Alba, Dad Sam Bith, which aired on BBC Alba on Christmas Day.  Mary Ann Kennedy is a musician, writer and broadcaster. She has been recognised on many fronts, including Radio Presenter of the Year at the international Celtic Media Festival. She worked for several years in the BBC’s Gaelic news service and went on to a freelance career in radio and television. Her favourite broadcast moments include producing and directing a 300-hundred strong global Gaelic choir for BBC ALBA’s lockdown Hogmanay and protesting the lack of Gaelic programming in the BBC at the age of seven.   Alistair Heather has produced documentaries on subjects such as Scottish culture, the Scots language and male violence against women. He writes regularly for the press and presents programmes such as award-winning Na Trads music show on BBC Alba and Dundee United&#x27;s DUTV match day coverage. He podcasts, broadcasts on social media, and works in communications for some of the biggest cultural organisations in Scotland.
