The Woodfield Pavilion

Learn to weave a traditional style willow basket using willow grown on Tooting
Common. Saturday March 25th 10:30-3:30pm

<h3>Starting at 10:0 at the Woodfield Pavilion finished by 3pm</h3><h3>Cost £30, including materials and light refreshments. </h3><h3>Please bring your own lunch.</h3>In this workshop you will learn<ul><li>The construction of a traditional ‘stake and strand’ type of basket</li><li>to use several different types of weave </li><li>how to select appropriate materials </li><li>a whole new vocabulary used in willow basket-making</li></ul>If you have a favourite pair of secateurs and an apron, bring them along. Also, an old tea towel or two and a water spray bottle or watering can. A range ofbasket-making tools will be available.Be prepared for working outside for some or all of the workshop - wrap up warm!We will use willow gathered locally from off Tooting Common. Enable Leisureand Culture who manage the Commons for Wandsworth Council arranged for agroup of local conservation volunteers to cut back the wild willow. This willow hasnot been planted and is not purposefully grown for baskets so the sizes of rodswill vary greatly.The course is run by local Tooting resident, Geraldine Kelly. As a member of theBasketmakers Association I first learned to make baskets about 20 years ago.Since then, I’ve done many courses, learnt a variety of basketry techniques,made many more baskets, and run various basket-making workshops.
