<h3>University of Bristol&#x27;s Socio-Technical Futures research group and Bristol Digital Futures Institute present a lecture by Harry Collins.</h3>In this inaugural event of the Research On Cultures of Engineering and Technology (ROCET) lecture series, we proudly welcome Harry Collins to Bristol to discuss his research into Artificial Intelligence technologies.Harry Collins is Distinguished Research Professor of Sociology and Director of the Centre for the Study of Knowledge, Expertise, and Science at Cardiff University. A Fellow of the British Academy, he is the author of over 45 books on science, knowledge and expertise. In this talk he will focus on his research into artificial intelligence — the subject of three of his books. Harry will explore two novel criticisms of A.I. First that developers have failed to properly grasp the social nature of intelligence, and secondly — unlike conventional scientific activities — failure, testing and legitimation work is left to users of A.I.Below, Harry describes his interest in A.I. and the focus of his talk in his own words. T﻿he event will be followed by Q&amp;A with Harry.<blockquote>‘I see Artificial Intelligence as a decades-long scientific quest to understand human-intelligence by creating a replica of it in mechanical/electronic form. The first of my criticisms of AI is that human intelligence is a social thing but AI seems to spend its time trying to re-create the individual brain. Brains won’t work like human brains unless they learn by socialisation and embedding in human language. Deep learning and ChatGPT-type language models mimic this to some extent by immersing themselves in bodies text produced by humans, but we can find the flaws. A second criticism concerns the strange games we have to play – we who are not technical experts are forced into finding the flaws (e.g. in ChatGPT) because the technical experts, who invent the stuff, won’t do it for us. Compare this with the work of physicists, whose greatest fear is making an incorrect claim. All that said, AI has taught us, and is still teaching us about human intelligence, and there is a long way to go.’</blockquote>N﻿.B. You can also register to attend this event online.
