Our exhibitions show work by contemporary artists, fine art prints from our archives and objects related to Aberdeen’s rich print history. The webinar considers the struggle for the recognition of women’s rights over their bodies, presented by Louise Irvine and Prof Wendy Savage

The fight for women’s control over fertility began decades ago. The 1967 Abortion Act followed years of campaigning for legislation in response to the appalling toll on women’s lives of back street abortions. Although it made it easier for women to get abortions, it fell short of decriminalising them. Aberdeen’s progressive approach to family planning helped pave the way for the Act as an agreement here not to prosecute doctors had shown that lives would be saved. In Northern Ireland, excluded from the Act, it took until 2019 for women to have the right to legal abortion. Women campaigned hard against attempts to reverse the 1967 Act and ran powerful campaigns against Bills from James White (1975), Benyon (1977) and Corrie (1979). But abortion rights need more than legislation – they need services to be available. Women continue to fight for improved quality and access to abortion services, and for full decriminalisation. To this day, women’s abortion rights are under threat worldwide with countries in Europe and the USA reversing legislation to severely restrict abortion access. The women’s movement also fought for many other aspects of women’s health: access to contraception, to improved maternity care, to health care that centred women and their needs and was not paternalistic or misogynistic. Women’s consciousness raising groups learned about women’s bodies and women’s health and demanded control not just over their fertility but over their bodies and health.Louise Irvine, a young medical student in the 70s in Aberdeen, was involved in the Women’s Liberation Movement and the campaign for abortion rights at the time. She’ll share some of her memories and invite a discussion about the challenges facing women’s abortion rights and wider issues related to women’s bodies and health today. Professor Wendy Savage, former chair of the National Abortion Campaign will join Louise in the webinar, making the links between past and present struggles for women’s abortion rights.
