Workshops and training events organised by UP SLIS.

This workshop focuses on designing learning experiences for individuals teaching in blended or online modalities. The discussion provides opportunities to revisit and rethink instructional strategies for potential translation or transformation to more active, collaborative, and engaging student experiences. Further, the presentation describes the challenges of interactive and collaborative activities online and shares tips and guidelines for successful implementation. Finally, the workshop addresses the benefits of designing for student engagement beyond the face-to-face format.

Celebrating 109 years of Library Science Education in the PhilippinesDuring the 100th meeting on March 18, 1914, the UP Board of Regent &quot;unanimously approved the establishment in the University of a special course of study for library training and the appointment of Dr. James A. Robertson as lecturer in Library Science&quot;. This would lead to the first Library Science class in Southeast Asia meeting on July 13, 1914 at the Filipiniana Division of the Philippine Library, with ten enrolled students.Today, UP SLIS continues the legacy of Dr. James A. Robertson, Ms. Mary Polk, Ms. Syrena McKee, Ms. Blanche Shelp, Mrs. Emma O. Elmer, and the other pioneers of library education in the region as we push the boundaries of information science and library practice.

About the FacilitatorDanilo Madayag Baylen is a 2022-2023 Fulbright U.S. Scholar in the Philippines at West Visayas State University in Iloilo. Early this year, WVSU honored him as an outstanding alumnus for education.Dr. Baylen is a tenured education professor at the University of West Georgia. He completed a doctorate in Instructional Technology (Northern Illinois) and master's degrees in Elementary Education (Florida Gulf Coast), Library and Information Studies (Alabama), and Counseling, focusing on Student Development in Higher Education (Northern Illinois). He completed his undergraduate degree in Economics at the University of the Philippines Diliman.Before his faculty position, he worked as an instructional designer, IT services director, and faculty developer in several American higher education institutions. He teaches, researches, and publishes innovative and effective technology integration practices, visual and media literacy education, creative thinking, and collaborative learning.As a scholar-practitioner, Dr. Baylen co-edited a book titled, Essentials of Teaching and Integrating Visual and Media Literacy, published by Springer and received the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) 2016 publication award. Also, he co-edited a publication focusing on LIS Education in the Asia-Pacific region in 2020. He serves as editor-in-chief of The Book of Selected Readings of the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) and completed three volumes from 2018 to 2020. Further, he sits on multiple editorial boards. Dr. Baylen shares his work at international and national scholarly meetings sponsored by AECT. He also attends and presents at conferences of the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA), the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY), the Children's Literature Association (ChLA), Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. (PLAI), and the Teaching, Colleges, and Community Online. In addition, he participated in several book selection award committees for children and young adults, including the Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC) Batchelder (for translated children's books published in the United States), Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) Youth and Children Literature, and the USBBY Outstanding List of Books for Young People with Disabilities and the Outstanding International Books. In addition, he has been named co-chair of the Notable Children’s Digital Media List for a two-year term. He also served on the ChLA International Committee.Finally, he completed leadership roles for several professional organizations. He is the past president of the Georgia Association for Instructional Technology (GAIT) and IVLA's past vice president and board member. He recently completed service to the AECT Board as Executive Secretary and is currently the Learner Engagement division representative to the Board.

Event Rules1) Attendees must follow COVID-19 health protocols in the venue. There will be a health check on entry and face coverings must be worn at all times while inside UP SOLAIR.2) All attendees must register individually and possess a ticket to be allowed entry. The tickets may be shown on the screen of a mobile device or printed. Individuals without a valid ticket would not be admitted due to limited workshop capacity and social distancing requirements.Those who require a letter of invitation for their workplace may request one from the Head of the 43rd GAB Lecture, Prof. Paul Jason Perez, at pj@slis.upd.edu.ph. This letter does not guarantee a space and the recipient must still register via Eventbrite.3) Attendees will receive an email after the workshop containing the link to an evaluation and certificate request form. Attendees wishing to receive a certificate should accomplish this form. Evaluation responses will be aggregated and anonymised when presented to the organisers and facilitator.This event collects your name, email address, and institutional affiliation for the purpose of managing attendance to the workshop. This information is managed by the UP School of Library and Information Studies through Eventbrite, and is administered by Prof. Jonathan Isip as the Information Officer. Your information is shared with the Philippine Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (PATLS) as co-organiser of the event, and with the University of the Philippines System under which UP SLIS is administered. Other information such as the courses you teach, your current teaching methodologies, areas of research, and familiarity with tools are also collected upon registration. This is associated with your identity and provided to the facilitator before the workshop to guide planning. This is also used for research and reporting to the University of the Philippines as part of the workshop evaluation.The processing of your personal information is governed by the UP Diliman Privacy Policy.
