Songs of Asia Minor

Rebetiko Carnival is a UK registered charity that was formed in 2016. The core of the charity is a small group of musicians thatover the past 10 yearshave dedicated their timeplaying for people less fortunate than themselves in hospitals, hospices, special needs residences, communal centers, and prisons, using Greek music as a therapy for those who need it.Rebetiko is a rich synthesis of music from all over Greece,  Asia Minor, Ottoman modal art music, Byzantine chant, and cafe music. Rebetiko songs convey the pain and suffering of the people at the time, through war, poverty, and incarceration, as well as other deeply felt sentiments and aspects of everyday life.

A month filled with Greek Rebetiko music in celebration of some of the greatest composers; Mikis Theodorakis, Markos Vamvakaris, Manos Hatzidakis, Stavros Xarhakos and more. Come and join us at this carnival of music.

Asia Minor music reflects the synthesis of the western tradition of polyphony with the eastern tradition of modes and microtones. During the great population movement in the Balkans in the early 20th century, outstanding musicians from Constantinople, Smyrna and the west coast of Asia Minor settled on the Greek islands and ports. They integrated into the local music scenes and gave shape to a new musical genre identified as "Asia Minor Song", "Santurovioli" or "Early Rebetika".

Today, there are only a few grand masters in the genre. Kyriakos Gouventas is considered the leading-figure worldwide. In his extraordinary career he has given hundreds of performances from China to America and from Africa to Australia, collaborating with internationally acclaimed artists and orchestras. Kyriakos, the &quot;Genius of the violin&quot; has created a musical scene of his own and a great following around his work. Our MissionRebetiko Carnival is a UK registered charity established in 2014 with a focus on taking music to hospitals, schools, care homes and special needs residences to contribute to people’s wellbeing. We also support young musicians by providing them with an environment where they can explore their capabilities and build on them. The festival helps us fund our community work.
