The Human Rights Festival 2023

Every year for the last 8 years our creative community have come together in June to celebrate Basha Uhuru. The 2020 edition of the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival was a casualty of the pandemic.But this forced us to become tech-savvy and to evolve.The Basha Uhuru Creative Uprising is a hybrid event that will bring us back together, at Constitution Hill -through a full week of programming streamed live, showcasing, celebrating and nurturing creative talent. We will explore this talent through art, music, film, design, dance and poetry. Through the different support opportunities like masterclasses, workshops, showcases,  panels and plenaries, the Basha Uhuru Creative Uprising will challenge and inspire you to reimagine the way you create and have the potential to change the way you do business.The Creative Uprising is our response to support our creative community most affected by the current COVID-19 crisis with 6 days of inspirational workshops, enterprise support, networking, talks and other opportunities with creative innovators, business leaders, technologists and entrepreneurs.The Basha Uhuru Creative Uprising, birthed in 2020, will grow into an always on programme to support creatives  in 2021.

The Human Rights Festival is back for its 5th edition taking place over Human Rights from the 25th-26th March 2023.

Constitution Hill has partnered with The Daily Maverick to present the 2023 edition of the Human Rights Festival under the theme: SEIZE THE POWER! The festival will be hosted at Constitution Hill on March 24 - 26. This year takes place at a time of growing anger and frustration at human rights violations in South Africa and across the world. But it’s also taking place at a time when people are mobilizing, rebuilding communities, and experimenting with alternatives, searching for solidarity.The two-day festival is designed to showcase the work of social justice movements in South Africa which have been instrumental in promoting and advancing human rights. The Human Rights Festival provides a fantastic opportunity for social justice organizations and movements to meet, learn, debate, and persuade. Constitution Hill will provide the stall space for participating organizations to curate engaging experiences for festival attendees through displays of materials, selling products, engaging in dialogue and (collectively or individually) highlighting causes.
