System Simulation is the provider of CollectionsIndex+ and CollectionsOnline for cataloguing and managing the range of collections held by cultural organisations – archives, books, object collections, images and digital assets.

With presentations from Louise Crossley (Collections Manager, Thackray Museum of Medicine), Alex Cowan (Project archivist, NDACA), Dr Keith Kahn-Harris (Project Director, Institute for Jewish Policy Research), Sian Woodward (Collections Manager, Museum of Domestic Design &amp; Architecture) the session promises to inspire and provide practical insight into how CollectionsIndex+ users can make the most of engaging their audiences with collections online. Users will also hear from Richard Beales (Operations Director, System Simulation) on updates and current developments focused on CollectionsOnline.Each presentation will be followed with time for questions.

Current Developments

In 2022 Thackray Museum of Medicine partnered with a young adult education centre in Leeds to develop a programme for 16–24-year olds and neurodivergent audiences. This programme’s aim was to develop a project which not only diversified our interpretation, but also developed the participants’ handling and interpretation skills. The project would culminate with a mini-online display of objects, with written interpretation, curated by the participants. It was made clear at the start that the interpretation did not have to be about the history of the object per se, it could also be about their lived experience with an item or about how it made them feel. https://collections.thackraymuseum.co.uk/swarthmoreeducation-centre

Thackray Museum of Medicine

NDACA brings to life the heritage and rich history of the UK Disability Arts Movement. For NDACA CollectionsIndex+ delivers a robust digital platform which is easily managed, updated and searched. Having full digital access is particularly useful when working with disabled volunteers and audiences. The website uses the API to facilitate the public search of the collections records held in CollectionsIndex+. https://the-ndaca.org/collection/

National Disability Arts Collection and Archive

The Institute for Jewish Policy Research uses CollectionsOnline to house its European Jewish Research Archive, a free to use online repository of research items on contemporary European Jewish populations. The Institute for Jewish Policy Research have also exported the archive to SPSS and Excel to conduct quantitative research. The process of turning the database into a dataset has been challenging technically and methodologically. However, the process has enabled us to map the research field in question in a way that has never been accomplished before. In the presentation we will explain the potentials and limitations of CollectionsOnline as the basis for a dataset. https://archive.jpr.org.uk/general-search

Institute for Jewish Policy Research

Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture (MoDA) aims to use CollectionsIndex+ to connect collections with users and collaboratively build knowledge. MoDA’s approach is to try different digital tools and platforms to present this collections data online in a variety of ways. This should help to transform learning for learners from all backgrounds, and continue to feed co-creation of knowledge and understanding back into a shared knowledge base. MODA’s website uses the API to put a selection of collection items online in a way that allows collections and content to link together. For example: https://moda.mdx.ac.uk/stories/notgeld/. Object pages can also be easily shared on social media or in articles. The CollectionsIndex+ API has also been used to add some collections to the Jstor Collections project. This will allow objects to appear in searches alongside relevant journal articles https://www.jstor.org/site/middlesex-university/silver-studio-katagami-collection/
