Just East of Jazz

A celebratory concert of inspirational artist Joni Mitchell’s greatest works, featuring Hattie Whitehead in a formidable 7-piece band.

St Jude's Church, Hampstead Garden Suburb

Sorry to say that we are unable to take online bookings on the day of the concert. There is still some seating available in the main central aisle of the church – you are welcome to turn up and pay on arrival (card or contactless only). Doors open 6.45pm, concert starts at 7.30pm.

"Hattie Whitehead’s wonderful soulful vocal was echoed first by Oli Weston’s sax and then by Chris Eldred on keys… an absorbing evening that was a triumph for Hejira …spell-binding!” The Jazz Mann

Bandleader for the project, Pete Oxley, writes:

”I have long been a massive fan of Joni Mitchell’s music, ranging from the sparse, folky early albums (such as Blue) to the late, gorgeously lush albums arranged by the brilliant Vince Mendoza (Both Sides Now and Travelogue). Somewhere in the middle of her career was what some people describe as her ‘jazz period’ – and it is from this era that we will be creating the programme for this gig.

Many of you will be aware of the album called Shadows And Light. This is a ‘Desert Island Disc’ for me – not just because her band comprises a whole load of my favourite musicians, but because as a live album, it fizzes with an incredible, electric atmosphere from the off! The songs on the album are beautiful, exciting and, as always with Joni, totally touching in the poignancy of the lyrics. There is a DVD of this concert and it is clear that Joni must have been totally living the dream, performing her masterpiece works with this group”.

Taking on the role of Joni Mitchell will be Hattie Whitehead – who not only pulls off the qualities of Mitchell’s singing…but also plays guitar like Joni, involving all sorts of Mitchell’s ‘open tunings’. Hattie grew up, surrounded by world-class musicians – being the daughter of the outstanding saxophonist, Tim Whitehead. Aside from mastering Joni’s mannerisms, Hattie is a great singer/songwriter in her own right: she won the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition in 2016 and has had hundreds of thousands of streams of her original works.

Hattie Whitehead ~ vocals & guitar

Ollie Weston ~ tenor & soprano saxophones

Robin Aspland ~ keyboards

Pete Oxley ~ guitar

Dave Jones ~ bass

Rick Finlay ~ drums

Phil Hopkins ~ percussion

A selection of beers, wines, soft drinks and light snacks can be ordered from the bar – cashless payments only.

Proceeds from this event will go towards THE ST JUDE’S RESTORATION FUND, just the beginning of looking after this unique Edwin Lutyens design so that the building can continue to serve the local community.

Ticket sales close at 11am on sat 17th June

There will still be some tickets if you’d like to just turn up on the night (but booking in advance guarantees your seat)

Info for those who have booked…

Your seats are reserved and will be labelled with the name of the person who made the booking.

A selection of beers, wines, soft drinks and light snacks can be ordered from the bar – cashless payments only.

As some of the seating in the church is quite firm (!) you are invited to bring your own cushions if you wish.

There is a limited amounted of parking in the church car park on a first come, first served basis.

Otherwise, if you are arriving by car, please allow time to find parking on adjacent streets – there is usually plenty of space within 5 minutes walking distance.

And finally, we don't want this concert to be super formal – so please feel free to get up between tunes to visit the bar or the washrooms – you don't have to wait until the interval.

Performance begins at 7.30pm and will end around 10.15pm
