Rhiannon Unbridled Spring 2023 Tour

Rhiannon Unbridled - a one-woman show with myth, memoire, song and shadow puppetry.

This Spring Rhiannon Unbridled reaches the end of its 11 date tour, with shows and workshops in Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Merseyside, Oxfordshire and Somerset.

In times gone by, women were punished for speaking up by an unholy contraption of iron known as the Scold's Bridle, that physically prevented a woman from speaking. Or, in some cases, swallowing. (See image below) There is one in the Ashmoelan Museum in Oxford today, casually exhibited next to some riding gloves and other medieval objects. This may seem a long time ago, but it leaves a legacy. As women, we might experience it in all kinds of ways:

When we hold ourselves back from speaking our truth

When we feel that our opinion is not important

When we don’t listen to our feelings

When we teach our children not to listen to theirs

When we feel isolated

When we think we are not right, because we don’t fit in.

This is a day to bury this legacy, not just for ourselves, but for the collective. Jackie Singer has been working with the subject of the Scold's Bridle in her one-woman show Rhiannon Unbridled since 2019. This ritual is the culmination of the project, during which the 'heavy energy' from the Scold's Bridle in the Ashmolean Museum will be buried at Waylands Smithy, a place of power for our deep ancestors, and a place transformation. (In local legend, Wayland the Smith forges horseshoes, and sharpens knives). Meanwhile, in the village hall at Uffington, a different transformation will be occuring - building a temple, where the voice and full presence of the Divine Feminine will be honoured once again. The day's events will take place partly in the village hall and partly on White Horse Hill, with a choice of whether to go to the hill in the morning to be part of the ritual burial or stay in the hall and build the temple space. We will all share lunch and the afternoon session of dance, celebration and completion. Please arrive at 9.45am to be ready to begin promptly at 10am. There is plenty of parking at the village hall. Please bring a vegetarian dish to share for lunch. Hot drinks and cake will be provided. The day will be held by:Jackie Singer - performer, dramatherapist and shamanic practitioner, also Co-Director of the new Oxford Community Goddess TempleNatasha Frost - Speech and Language Therapist and Dramatherapist currently training in Open Floor Movement Practice.
