What process do you use to design low energy and Passivhaus buildings?

Consolidating experience from over a decade of designing and building Passivhaus buildings the Passivhaus Overlay for the RIBA Plan of Work explains what the Passivhaus design process does differently.

The Passivhaus Overlay supports delivering buildings that satisfy the RIBA 2030 Challenge because:
1) The Passivhaus Standard is a design standard, whilst the 2030 Challenge is an in-use performance target.
2) Evidence shows Passivhaus buildings close the performance gaps which plague other buildings, offering clients and project teams greater confidence

The Passivhaus Overlay draws upon a survey undertaken by the RIBA North East Sustainable Futures Forum which clearly demonstrated that Passivhaus Designers make proactive decisions at earlier stages in the design process. Furthermore, experience shows early decision making increases the opportunity for project teams to deliver cost effective Passivhaus buildings for their clients. and...

By establishing clearly defined, project specific parameters and metrics, project teams are also able to make informed intelligent decisions which can also reduce upfront carbon and lifecycle carbon emissions.

The Passivhaus Overlay has a simple, easy to adopt structure which explains WHAT has to be delivered, HOW it should be done to ensure quality, and WHO does it.

To add another level of nuance, the Responsibility Matrix sets out the roles and responsibilities of team members.

Burrowing in even deeper, by identifying what and when actions should be undertaken, the #PassivhausPlan supports optimised decision making.

(Whether or not this information is presented formally will depend upon the scale of the project and the budget.)

Of course the Passivhaus Plan can be customised even further for each project in order to develop a Project Specific Passivhaus Plan.

The Project Specific Passivhaus Plan caters for retrofit, large projects etc. which require project teams to consider additional parameters.

The Passivhaus Overlay is a powerful tool which will help clients and project teams to deliver Passivhaus building successfully.

To learn more about the Passivhaus Overlay and discover how you can apply it to your projects, attend the free Sustainability Mastermind on Wednesday 29 March.
