Djibril Diop Mambéty, 1992</h1><h2>Senegal, France, Switzerland, UK, Netherlands, Italy</h2><h2></h2><h2>Introduced by Wasis Diop, Kaoru Egushi and June Givanni</h2><h3></h3><p><em>Hyènes</em> is an adaptation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s tragicomic play <em>The Visit</em> (1956), with added criticism of neocolonialism and consumerism in Senegal. A wealthy patron visits the near-bankrupt town of Colobane and offers to make the townspeople rich, in exchange for the life of a popular shopkeeper. The screening is introduced by composer and musician Wasis Diop, who is also the director’s brother, <em>Hyènes</em> actor Kaoru Egushi, and June Givanni.</p><p>T﻿he screening will take place in Raven Row's lower gallery space, which is wheelchair-accessible from Frying Pan Alley. <h1>B﻿iographies</h1><h1></h1><h2>W﻿asis Diop</h2><p><strong>W﻿asis Diop </strong>is an internationally renowned Senegalese musician, born in 1950 in Dakar, Senegal. He is known for blending traditional Senegalese folk music with modern pop and jazz. His past work includes soundtracks to <em>Hyenas</em> (1992), and <em>Darrat</em> (2006), and albums <em>No Sant</em> (1995), <em>Toxu</em> (1998), and <em>Everything is Never Quite Enough</em> (2004).</p><p></p><h2>J﻿une Givanni</h2><p><strong>June Givanni </strong>(Curator and Director, JGPACA) is a pioneering international film curator with over 30 years’ experience in film and broadcasting. Her work is principally concerned with the distribution and exhibition of African and African diasporic cinemas. She has worked independently and across a range of institutions and contexts, including the Greater London Council (GLC), the British Film Institute (BFI) – where she co-founded the Black Film Bulletin – and the Independent Television Commission (ITC). She has programmed for festivals including Images Caraïbes in Martinique, the Toronto International Film Festival’s Planet Africa strand, and the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Nigeria; and has served on festival juries including the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO), the Zanzibar Festival of the Dhow Countries (ZIFF), and the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Nigeria.</p>
