Cardiff MADE is a not for profit organisation, led by artists to bring unique and the extraordinary to to everyday audiences as part of daily life's encounter. Opening eyes to new music, visual language, performance and visual art forms through presentations within an intimate events space - by day a gallery, by night a bespoke venue that nurtures art into the open. MADE is also a cultural producer curating events in partnership with other community focused spaces and arts organisations such as Cathays Community centre, Tactile Bosch, Fizzi Events and Groundwork Pro. It has developed a highly successful programme of live perfomance events, notably the Electric Soup and Clear Cut strands.

Join us for a talk with Photographer Abbie Trayler-Smith as part of our Higgins Initiative series of guest speaker led talks.

We’ve commissioned a series of Saturday Talks with 6 eminent photographers who have contributed considerably to the canon of photography, located in Wales.After presenting an overview of significant themes and projects in their work, there will be an opportunity for prospective applicants to the Higgins Initiative and current ffocws scheme cohort to book a slot with the guest speaker to show and discuss aspects of their own work.Abbie Trayler-Smith is an acclaimed portrait and documentary photographer, specialising in capturing people’s reactions and responses to contemporary events and social issues. Often challenging, sometimes tinged with wry humour, but always beautifully created, Abbie’s work is exquisitely personal and naturally observational.Born in Wales and based between London and the Southwest of the UK, she works all over the world. Recently she has worked in the aftermath of conflicts in Iraq and Darfur; covered environmental activism in the Antarctic and the Indian Ocean; chronicled the national celebrations for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, and a few months later, the public mourning for her passing.

She is often commissioned to shoot documentary campaigns and narrative portraits for organisations including: Greenpeace, The Samaritans, Oxfam, Save The Children, IRC, UNICEF, and companies including: BBC, Sony, Novo Nordisk, as well as working on assignments for most of the leading international media organisations.Abbie has been the recipient of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery in London, a World Press Photo Award, and successfully funded her own Kickstarter campaign for the publication of her book ‘Kiss It!’ later this year with GOST Books, which is part of her ongoing, personal project ‘The Big O’ on childhood obesity.

'I am a portrait and documentary photographer, working both commercially and as a cultural reporter. As a photographer of people, I’m always trying to find a deeper kind of likeness, something more personal and maybe more honest. I’ve always been fascinated by the way we all perceive ourselves, which is often hidden from the way other people perceive us. Finding images that show something of both those perspectives is when and where I do my best work. Capturing truly natural moments takes patience and compassion, and that allows my subjects to relax and to truly be themselves. That means that most of my expertise is not to do with lenses, shutters and light, but everything to do with understanding, empathy and reassurance.'
