Objective

On the occasion of the next ITS Congress in Strasbourg, ESOA and ERTICO are pleased to invite you to participate in a workshop: ‘5G enabled Connected Vehicles – powered by Satcoms’.

5G will create infinite opportunities for the fast development of the connected market and will eventually become indispensable to it. In this regard, satellite brings unique capabilities and will play a key role to achieve the expected goals.

This workshop will bring together relevant actors from different sectors to discuss the limitations of a single network to meet the requirements of an evolving connected car market and how only cross-sector collaboration will ensure success.

No single network can meet the requirements of the evolving connected car market so that Satellite is a key component of a ‘network of networks’ working alongside 3/4/5G, WiFi, DSRC and other technologies.

Satellite brings unique capabilities that offer more efficient and secure means of supporting safety and operational requirements, as well as a network extension for nearly any requirement. However success in the market requires partnerships with key players in the connected car ecosystem (OEMs, Tier 1s, service providers) to enable integration to systems onboard the vehicle.

The workshop program will be divided in two sessions focusing on business models and product development to present current connected car challenges and how a partnership between the different stakeholders can ensure the automotive industry to reach the next challenging Connected Car targets.

Speakers

Andrew Faiola, Director Mobility Solutions, Intelsat

Andrew leads the Mobility Solutions sales team in Europe. If it floats, flies, or rolls, we’ve got it covered. Prior to this, Andrew led the European sales team and also led Intelsat’s Global Accounts teams on the Mobility and Broadband side of the business.

Prior to joining Intelsat, Andrew was European Sales Director at New Skies Satellites in the UK, and held various sales and marketing roles at ESATEL Communications, a small, independent teleport in the USA. In what seems like another life, he worked in the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS), the Embassy of Mexico in Washington, DC, and at NASA, where he conducted project development and implementation work for Latin America and the Asia-Pacific involving the provision of Internet service and remote sensing for environmental purposes.

He has also authored publications about the North American DTH market, distance learning in America, U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America, and Latin American economic development.

He received a BA in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis, and an MA in International

Mohaned Juwad, Senior Manager - Spectrum Policy, Intelsat

An accomplished satellite regulatory expert, with specialised expertise in Satcom and satellite spectrum regulations and more than 8 years industrial experience working in the satellite sector. Before joining Intelsat, Mohaned was manager at Avanti Communications managing the ESA funded projects for Next Generation Access DVB-RCS technology. He successfully pursued Business Development deals and satellite commercial projects within Europe and Middle East and has a large experience in WRC12/15 and ITU radio regulations and policy.

He holds a PhD on Wireless Communications from Brunel University and received a BEng in Electrical and Electronics from the University of Hertfordshire.

David Riemenschneider, Senior Advisor Inmarsat Connected Car Program

David has been in the automotive industry for 32 years in leading roles at OEMs, T1’s and business services suppliers.

David works closely with the Inmarsat team to help bring all the benefits of satellite to automotive manufacturers and T1 suppliers. David has a long-history working with industry leaders in interim and consultancy roles on auto tech, IoT and M2M applications. Roles have included automotive M2M and connected vehicle implementations to IoT-focused smart farming and intelligent transport initiatives. David also has a strong auto technology M&A background and often works with OEM’s and T1’s on both buy and sell-side mandates. David is an early stage investor in several technology sectors including AI in the automotive domain.

David has worked for a global OEM as aftersales director and many of the global OEMs in the automotive aftersales business services & technology sectors delivering managed data solutions and SaaS platforms as the CEO of the UK-based Clifford Thames Group

Joel Schroeder, ESOA

Mr Joel Schroeder is a member of ESOA’s Network & Services Policy Group. He serves as Vice President, Strategy & Business Development for Inmarsat’s Connected Car Program based in Washington, DC. Mr. Schroeder leads a cross-functional team responsible for building Inmarsat’s Connected Car business, driving long-term growth through the development of new partnerships and technologies. He previously led Strategic Development initiatives for Inmarsat’s Enterprise business.

Prior to joining Inmarsat in 2009, Mr Schroeder spent more than 15 years doing business and market development in the telecommunications industry in North America, the European Union, and many emerging markets. During this time, he has lived in London, Moscow, Washington, and Accra, Ghana. He holds an M.A. in International Communication from the American University in Washington, DC.
